According to my insurance, AllState, my Vibe is considered an SUV. According to Consumer Reports it is classifed as a "sport compact" car. Because my insurance classifies my Vibe as a SUV, the insurance is jacked up. But if they were to classify it as a sport compact car then I would be saving a lot of money each year. So, how is your Vibe listed by your insurance company?

Saskatchewan Government Insurance calls it a station wagon.I had quite the chuckle when I got my registration & insurance. I had just bought a Satellite (silver) Vibe, and my registration & insurance certificate says GREY STATION WAGON. Sheesh, they're not even close!

I looked through my contract with my insurance... says its under a P5... what ever that is... but I believe its classed as either a hatch or wagon... certainly not an SUV.

I'm with Safeco and they class it is a "Babe Magnet NOT".[Seriously folks - take my wife - please!]They just list it (as well as my T&C Van - also a Babe Magnet NOT) as a 4 door on the bill I get but I know they have a rating for each and every vehicle not just broad categories such as "SUV". Virtually claim free for many years, pleasure/less than 3 miles from work, coll $500 ded but high $500,000 liab & uninsured coverage. About $600 a year insurance per vehicle. On a per mile basis I pay plenty as I only drive an average of about 7,000 miles on each per year - maybe less. Depends on how many 1,350 mite RT's we take to see the grandkids.

Is your Vibe AWD? That might be a determining factor on whether it's classified as an "SUV" or not.If you don't think the rate is fair, ASK YOUR AGENT/COMPANY to explain what you're getting and why your rate is what it is. If you don't like it SHOP AROUND. Be sure to shop for a 'package' that includes home and auto insurance, because most companies give you a discount (up to 25%) if you have all your coverage with them. Car insurance prices are determined based upon some or all of the following:1) Loss experience of the individual insured motorist (e.g. how many claims have you filed, how much each one cost to settle, and if they were your fault.2) Credit history (fairly recent - not all companies use this YET)3) Amount and types of coverage (Comprehensive, Collision, Uninsured Motorist, Deductible, 'Gap' insurance if you're financing, Towing, Life Insurance (some companies sell this as part of auto policies) and so on.)4) 'Symbol' rating of the vehicle based upon industry loss experience(e.g. Saab Turbo = 21, Vibe = 12, Volkswagen Cabriolet = 11, Ford Taurus = 5)5) Additional vehicles or dwellings insured with the same company6) Age and loss experience of other drivers insured on the same policy7) What city/county/state/and/or province you live in.8) Current yield of government bonds (REALLY! - if companies can't make any money in the bond market on their reserves, they raise rates)9) Whether Punxatawney Phil saw his shadowAND MOST IMPORTANTLY10) The fact that most insureds don't try to understand what they're buying, bother to read their policies, or ask their agent questions about what coverages they're getting and what prices they're paying.
My 2003 Vibe Base Auto 2-tone Salsa "SalsaWagon" was built in May 2002. I acquired it in Feb 2004/Traded it in on a 2016 Honda HR-V in Feb 2018.
Allstate NJ sees it as a Wagon. All I did was give them the VIN number and my Allstate acct number..they didn't ask anything else..

It is more than I was paying for my 99 Explorer Sport (which should have high insurance, being a 2 door Ford SUV with Firestone tires), but it's also 4 years newer, and a "first year" car.I just look at the outrageous rates that Alberta & the US is paying, and I don't complain about insurance rates. Sure we can't "shop around" but at least we're guaranteed to get insurance when we apply!

Wow, I must really be getting screwed over by my AllState because they will not give up on their theory that it is an SUV. Hmm, I will need to shop around. Thanks for the input!

YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

Pekin Insurance, at least for me, calls it a WAG 4D, if that helps. I may have to give Safeco a call, I like that high liability thing. Pekin maxes out at 50/100, or so my agent told me. Here is the weird part: I am 14 months older than my GF, but for her to be on the insurance only (she drives it in the winter) was going to be over $100 more! And Im the one with a ticket on my record (66 in a 65 in Iowa, grrrrr)! It gets weirder the Vibe insurance is just a little less than my 4WD Z71 Silverado! I am payin around $105/ month for both. Of course, the Vibe can not haul as many clover bales as the truck...not even with the trunk organizer lol
