Exactly what happened to my boyfriend in our 2000 Cavalier on the 401. Gas gauge said he had 1/8th of a tank left, but he had actually run out.

My mothers's 2000 Grand Prix's is broken, and my dad's 2000 GMC Sierra is broken too, They show no fuel and the fuel light shines when it's actually full. Kinda pisses me off.

Good link - I know of a few people that had the same problem - ran out of fuel although the gauge stated a quarter tank remained. My '01 Cavalier does this so I never chance it and always try to keep 1/2 a tank full.Thankfully the Vibe doesn't have this issue (non-GM components) - as I have driven extremely low at one time when a gas station was not near. Luckily I made it, but the gauge was very accurate.

My 1999 GMC Sierra has had erratic fuel readings for several months and appears to be getting worse. With mine the problem seems to be reversed. When I fill up, the low fuel light comes and the gauge reads empty. Almost every time I start it, the gauge reads empty for a while and then returns to normal. I was told there was no recall and that the repair was very expensive so I decided to live with it. Now that I know how wide spread this problem is I will definitely be going after a free replacement.

Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »Isn't like 1/8th of a tank less than a 1/4 of a tank and wouldn't the low fuel light be on?No the fuel light doesn't come on that early. An 1/8th of a tank is half of a quarter of a tank. Still plenty in there. The fuel light only comes on when you're hugging the empty line.
