Rambler, welcome to genvibe. There are a a couple of threads about disabling the auto headlights.Check out
http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=1188 NY Pete set his up with a switch. If you disconnect your TS (TS = twilight sentinel, or the light sensor in the dash by the bottom left of the windshield) then your full power headlights will not come on automatically, but your daytime runnning lights (( ~1/2 bright headlights with NO tail lights) will still come on. Probably safer to have the auto headlights than to force full time DRL. In the past week, I have seen three cars driving with just DRLs on at night. Apparently the driver, seeing some sort of headlights, did not realize that they had no tail lights, which can be dangerous at night. It looks like the wiring change required to install an automatic headlight control switch will be pretty straightforward, the hardest part will eb accessing the wires lying on your back and reaching up behind the dash. Pretty tight. If you do the mod, let us know how it goes and what switch you used.
