Cold air from around door handle

Post by pmh013 »

Last night's commute was really really windy. Hmm, why is my left hand getting cold? Where is that draft coming from? After some searching , I discovered a massive cold air leak around the door handle on the driver's door. Anyone else notice this? You'd probably only notice it if the wind is broadsiding the car, because when I turned into the wind, the draft went away.

Definitely no problems here!Perhaps a piece of insulation got knocked out of place.Doesn't sound like it should be a major repair...

I had the exact problem the other day. The wind was around 40-50MPH gusts and I could feel a breaze coming through the door handle. When the wind was behind me, I no longer felt it, only when the wind was hitting the drivers side. That stupid wind also cost me a quarter tank of gas for a 55 mile trip

Most likely the draft is from high velocity wind entering the inside of the door either from the wheelwell area or at the front of the door. If you look at the hinge when your door is open you'll find a hole in your door where all the wires pass through. This doesn't happen as much with today's cars, that's why you only noticed it when there was high wind hitting your car. My '76 Impala, '74 Monte Carlo, '77 Malibu, and '84 Monte Carlo all had a breeze coming from the handle at freeway speeds. The '92 Tracker, '92 Sable, and '00 Sunfire almost never had that problem.Hope this helps,ND
