platinum vs satelite silver: what is the difference?!

Post by bluneon »

is there any? local cadillac dealership parts computer says based on my vin the color is satelite silver when i went to order touch up paint. yet, the 2006 pontiac vibe new car sales brochure only shows platinum, no other color resembles 'silver' in the brochure.

They're probably the same. Though, one may be metallic and the other not. I can't be sure as I have an '09 and they call it liquid platinum metallic; obviously metallic lol.

I bought some paint for my son's 06 from the dealer, and if I recall correctly, the paint bottle said satellite silver, but it had the 14U code on it. I looked on some paint websites and it looks like the code for the earlier cars was 13U, so there might be a slight difference. Also look on here:

silver was "satellite" 13U from 03-04, platinum 14U from 05-08. I think you are indicating you have an 06, and it's paint code is 14U. There must be some difference between satellite and platinum, other than the name, for GM to bother switching the paint code, so use 14U as the key identifier, and not the color name.

I have an '03 Satellite Vibe, but have never done an in person comparison with a platinum vibe to see what differences there may be between the 13U and 14U paint.

I understand this is an old post but thought I would add my recent experience. 13U and 14U are different shades of silver. The 13u from gen 1 has a slightly yellow or gold tint as compared to the 14u "Platinum Silver" offered on the later 1.5 gen Vibe models. I have an o6 with the 14u and replaced a front fender from a 04 I found from a salvage yard. After installing it, it clearly does not match (see pic)

That said, I am trying to do some touch up on the plastic cladding. Since COVID, for whatever reason, the cost of automotive paint, even Dupli-Color, has gone to a price that is almost unaffordable. As most have already learned "Dupli-color" does not offer an aerosol touch up option although I have been searching for options and found the 14U is very close to the GM silver on my 2007 Cobalt. I purchased the Dupli-color option for the Cobalt (BGM0508) and found the color in the right brightness but the metal flake is too fine, and therefore appears a little different in curtain lighting conditions. I also believe I found a Dupli-Color "close match" for the 13u, if anyone is interested, but have only concluded this match from color sampling and have not actually painted anything to verify the color matched in larger applications.

My final conclusion for my solution (because I am a cheap *&^#@!!) is a Rust-Oleum option which I believe has a very close match in silver tone to the Platinum Silver 14U. However, this paint has larger metal flake than OEM. On the plastic lower side cladding, I am hoping it will look fine for the price. The Rust-Oleum part number is 248927 "Steel" - High Performance Wheel Paint. This is single stage and the price is about 1/3rd the cost of other options if you order it on-line. Like most Rust-Oleum, the single stage finish is a little on the dull side which is great for the cladding. Adding 3 coats of Rust-Oleum "Cristal Clear" over the top and it should be good enough for the smooth areas like fenders, doors and bumpers.. Please try some sample areas to verify this works for you. I am not super picky and wanted something that looked ok, without spending a fortune.

This pic is to show the color match. The front fender flair (plastic cladding) represents the Rust-Oleum color.. The spray nozzle is not very good so it is difficult to get the finish looking OEM but again, for the cost, it is good enough for the kids I hang out with..
