2009 AWD Vibe Inner Tie Rod Replacement

Post by jbugg »

One of my rubber boots for the inner tie rod on my 2009 AWD Vibe has ripped and the tie rod is making clunking sounds. The car has 160K miles on it so it’s not too surprising this happened. I know I need to replace it, and I want to do it myself to save money. My questions are these:

Do I replace both inner tie rods even though the other one is fine?

Do I replace tie rod ends as well even though they are fine?

How can I find the inner tie rod part I need? I’ve had trouble finding the right part, and I think it might be because GM sells both tie rods as a single, connected part/unit. On other cars they are usually separated, and you can find them easily, but I could also be wrong on this.

I'd just do one, and monitor the condition of the others. My '07 has 225K miles on it with original tie rods, though I've replaced struts and a wheel bearing.

You can find the inner tie rod ends on a Toyota parts site--they're the same as the Matrix. They're attached to the steering rack and you'll need to pull the boots to access a wrench flat.
