Police looking for driver who hit, killed man walking on US Highway 59 near South Parkway
Thursday, December 23, 2021

SUGAR LAND, Texas (KTRK) -- Sugar Land police say they are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a man who was walking on the northbound feeder road of U.S. Highway 59 on Monday night.

Austin Reese, 37, was walking near South Parkway at about 8:48 p.m. when he was hit by a light colored 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe, according to police.

Police said the driver, who they believe is a man, did not stop and sped off.

Surveillance video recovered from a nearby gas station shows the vehicle drive through the parking lot shortly after the crash.

Reese was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Anyone with information concerning the hit-and-run, the vehicle or the driver is urged to contact Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.
website has gas station video (after 30 sec. ad) of a monotone satellite Vibe with aftermarket roof rack crossbars and damage to the front passenger fender. Steelies with no wheel covers on the passenger side. Article says its a 03-04, but to me at first the grill looked more like 05-08, but maybe 03-04, what do you think?

1ZZ engine made someone's list of most reliable engines

https://www.hotcars.com/most-reliable-car-engines/

Toyota 1ZZ Engine

Next up is another entry for Toyota — the 1ZZ engine. The 1ZZ is the first engine in the Toyota ZZ family, and it's also an inline-4 DOHC engine made with the same materials as the 2AR engine. However, these offer a lower displacement which is optimized for fuel efficiency for their more economical cars.

This engine was such a success, they have decided to equip it in a variety of cars. Ranging from sedans, coupes, small SUVs, and even mid-engined cars. Applications for this engine are on the Toyota Corolla, Toyota MR2 Spyder, Lotus Elise, Toyota Wish, Toyota Allion, Toyota Matrix, or Pontiac Vibe.

You can add just about any Honda engine to that list. My vote is for the L series engine put in the first generation Fit (US version) with the 1.5 liter engine. Drives like a roller skate and must have been the engine Mazda engineers studied before coming up with their zoom-zoom campaign. I swear you can pour sand down the fill hole and the thing will keep on running. Trying to keep the car looking nice while attaining the expected 300,000 miles is another issue

It's been interesting watching the news alerts change over the years.

Also interesting to see Vibe news stories from abroad where the cars were never sold. Presumably where our dead Vibes somehow go on to live and die another life.

Two arrested on gun, drug charges after car chase involving Akron police, highway patrol
Akron Beacon Journal
Jan 25, 2002

Two people were arrested early Tuesday morning on weapons and drug charges following a pursuit that involved Akron police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

A man and a woman were arrested after their vehicle crashed into a snow drift near Grant and Sherman streets, Akron police reported.

Police said they attempted a traffic stop about 11:45 p.m. Monday for suspicious activity and an equipment violation near Copley Road and South Hawkins Avenue. Police said the car, a Pontiac Vibe, refused to stop.

Akron police gave chase and ended pursuit on Interstate 76 at State Route 43 in Portage County and returned to the city limits. The Highway Patrol then went after the vehicle, Akron police said in a news release. The chase went into Stark County as well, Akron police said.

Police said 20 minutes later the Pontiac Vibe returned to Akron, with Akron police again chasing the car until it crashed.

The female driver, 32, got out of the car and ran but was stopped and arrested shortly after without incident, police said. Police said they recovered a handgun near her feet.

A front seat male passenger, 30, also ran out and was chased and arrested. Police said they found him with a backpack that contained a stolen handgun, methamphetamine, suspected fentanyl, marijuana and related drug paraphernalia.

The woman was charged with tampering with evidence, obstructing official business, carry concealed weapon, improper handling, weapons under disability, and failure to comply with order of a police officer. She was taken to Summit County Jail.

The male was charged with trafficking in drugs, two counts of drug abuse, weapons under disability, and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General for medical evaluation and then taken to Summit County Jail.

Two other adult passengers in the car were released and not charged.

Chase lasted over 20 minutes. Usually that only happens with performance cars. Reiterates the Vibe would have made a good police car.

Apparently some police switched to Vibes for 'greener' vehicles.

If you search for "pontiac vibe" on chron.com (the Houston Chronicle) you get a number of hits.

Trussville PD: 2 in custody, 1 on the run after fleeing traffic stop

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. —
Two people are in custody and one person is still on the run after a car fled a traffic stop conducted by Trussville police Monday afternoon.

Trussville police said officers attempted to stop a silver Pontiac Vibe with a R and S Automotive drive-off tag traveling on Interstate 59 South near Chalkville Mountain Road around 3:46 p.m., but the man driving wouldn't pull over. It's unclear what prompted the attempted traffic stop.

Officers then began pursuing the vehicle and contacted Birmingham police and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to assist. During the pursuit, the fleeing driver hit another vehicle near the Roebuck Walmart and continued to flee until it came to a stop in the 1300 block of 6th Street Northwest in Center Point. Two people were taken into custody there.

The male driver then fled and led officers on a foot chase through the woods until they lost sight of him. Authorities are still searching for him as of 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Police K9 units and JCSO's STAR 1 helicopter were deployed during the search, but have since cleared the scene.

During the investigation, Trussville police discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Birmingham.

Emergency personnel responded about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to a crash involving an SUV and a train at the railroad crossing on Bluff Road at Outlet Road west of Maeystown.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. There were three occupants in the vehicle, which had its front end knocked off in the collision. The driver was a 15-year-old female who had one of her parents as a passenger. The train was traveling north.
Responding agencies included the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Valmeyer Police Department and Monroe County EMS. A Union Pacific official also responded to the scene.
Police said the young driver of a 2007 Pontiac Vibe accidentally drove straight instead of following the railroad crossing angle to the right, resulting in the SUV getting stuck on the tracks. The driver and passengers – 43-year-old Michael D. Berg and an 11-year-old female – exited the vehicle before the collision occurred.

Fontana CA
Fontana Police Department investigates alleged 'Peeping Tom' case
Mar 3, 2022 Updated Mar 8, 2022

Fontana Police Department detectives are investigating an alleged “Peeping Tom” case and are seeking input from residents who may have been victimized.

The suspect was identified as Gilberto Gonzales, 27, and investigators discovered numerous videos in his possession, according to a Facebook post by the P.D. on March 3.

Gonzales was allegedly secretly recording female victims at various restrooms, changing rooms, retail stores, restaurants, massage parlors, hospitals, and doctors' offices while driving his white 2006 Pontiac Vibe through city neighborhoods, police said.

The suspect parked his vehicle in public areas where women walked by on the sidewalk and recorded himself masturbating, police said.

“It appears several women may have been victims of seeing him masturbate,” police said on Facebook.

Investigators believe there are additional victims who have not been identified. Persons who were victims of being secretly recorded or of Gonzales exposing himself to them are urged to call Detective Weiske at (909) 350-7774.

Two for today. At least in these, the Vibes were in accidents caused by other vehicles, and not in the news due to some despicable behavior of the vibers

{long story about police chase}
...

“The vehicle then continued accelerating without braking into the intersection on Albert at the Himrod Avenue Expressway. There the auto ran the red light and caused a massive crash between it and a blue Pontiac Vibe,” the report states.

....

Betts was ejected from her vehicle and was seriously injured, the report states. Her condition at the hospital was “critical.”

Betts told The Vindicator on Friday she suffered three fractures in her spine, was in a coma for several days at the hospital, suffered a brain injury, a shattered hip and had to have a rod implanted in her knee. Her damaged spleen had to be removed.

‘HARDEST YEAR’

In her statement to Sweeney before sentencing, Betts said the past 10 months since the crash has been “the hardest year of my life.

“I was excited to have my second child. I was really confused when the nurses said I was in an accident. I truly didn’t know what was going on. My memory was like a black hole.”

She added, “I remember the day I sat up for the first time, walking for the first time and just crying.” She said “there’s no way that I actually flew through a windshield.”

Rob Andrews, Mahoning County assistant prosecutor, told Sweeney that Betts suffered severe injuries in the crash, some of which “she will never recover from.”

Both vehicles were traveling north on College Street when, according to the police report, the mail truck was “traveling at a speed that was greater than reasonable” and struck the rear bumper of the Pontiac, causing disabling damage to both vehicles. All occupants were wearing their seatbelts and drivers reported no injuries, police said, but an 83-year-old female passenger in the mail truck sustained suspected minor injuries and was taken by Myerstown First Aid Unit to Hershey Medical Center. The Myerstown man was cited for driving vehicle at safe speed.

You never know. I was ticketed for having an 'obscured license plate' that the prosecutor looked at the photo, and said "I see you fixed your obscured license plate". I then pointed out that it was the original obscured plate, and showed her a picture without the protective cover. She then said 'I think we'll dismiss this one.'

Cops will ticket for ANYTHING, especially if they're in a mood. They don't care if they're overridden later, because they'll never show up anyway.

So, maybe the cop was trying to get it tossed out of court later :)

An officer observed a suspicious white Pontiac Vibe parked in a grassy area on Curtis Street. The car had sticks underneath the front tires of the vehicle and appeared to be stuck in the yard, often associated with possible stolen vehicles. Upon approach of the car there was no tag located on it and it was unoccupied. The officer ran the car’s VIN through info channel and found that it was registered to a man from Nashville.
This was only one entry in a list of various police actions. Looks like Chattanooga is a relatively calm town if that's all that made the police blotter

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — A woman is dead after a head-on crash reported on South Northshore Drive near Concord Park on Wednesday, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Knox County Rural Metro Fire, Knox County Rescue, and AMR responded to a two-vehicle crash on South Northshore Drive near Concord Park around 3:10 p.m., according to Rural Metro.

When crews arrived, they said they found two vehicles had crashed head-on, blocking all of S. Northshore. The vehicles involved were a 2008 Dodge Avenger driven by Tyler Trovillo, 34, of Knoxville, and a 2007 Pontiac Vibe driven by Suzanne Russel, 68, of Knoxville, THP said.

Rural Metro said none of the drivers were trapped.

Russel was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. THP said that she died as a result of her injuries.

The other driver, Trovillo, ended up getting treatment at UT Medical Center for treatment for what his family said were broken bones, including broken ribs.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Charges are pending for Trovillo, the THP report states.

BEATRICE – A highway collision in Wymore Thursday morning was caused by a vehicle crossing the centerline and colliding with another.

Gage County Sheriff’s deputies say a Pontiac Vibe driven by 20-year-old Elizabeth Sayers of Wymore was traveling south on U.S. Highway 77 when her vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a northbound Chrysler Pacifica van, driven by 38-year-old Lovone Rabstejnek, of Wymore.

Sayers told authorities she apparently fell asleep before her vehicle crossed the centerline.

No injuries were reported at the scene, but the driver of the van admitted herself and three children for examination for injuries. Wymore Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.

The collision happened near U.S. 77 and H Street, at around 8 a.m., Thursday. The driver of the Pontiac was cited for driving left of center.

El Paso TX
Two drivers fled the scene of fiery multi-vehicle crash at I-10 and Hawkins

Update (4/11) - El Paso police say two drivers ran from the scene of a fatal multi-vehicle crash. Their identities remain unknown.

Investigators say the first crash happened at 5:49 a.m. on I-10 east at Hawkins when the driver of a Corvette lost control and crashed into the center median. The Corvette came to a stop. The driver of a Tahoe going the same direction rear-ended a Pontiac Vibe, causing the Pontiac Vibe to lose control, hit a cement barrier and burst into flames. The driver of the Pontiac Vibe died due to his injuries. That victim's identity has not been released.

An El Paso woman, Yvonne Delgado, reached out to our newsroom and said her brother was the man who died in the fiery crash. She identified him as Raymond Barron. Delgado said her brother was a hard-working man and was on his way to work as a security guard when the crash happened.

“I can’t cope with it. I don’t know how I’m coping with it day-by-day. It’s just too much," Delgado said, fighting back tears.

Police say the drivers of the Corvette and Tahoe fled the scene.

Delgado and her family are calling on the two drivers to turn themselves in.

"Please, if you’re out there and you did this to him, please just come forward. We want closure. Why did you do this to him? He was just an innocent man going to work," Delgado said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 915-212-4080.

The drivers of the other two vehicles have been identified and arrested. Apparently both were going over 110 mph when they hit the Vibe.

High Speed Chase And Crash Leads To Numerous Charges

Jamestown, CA — This week a sheriff’s deputy did a record check on a Pontiac Vibe spotted near Highway 108 and Mill Villa Road during the early morning hours.

There was a man and woman inside, and the male driver accelerated and took off. There was a high-speed chase where the driver went over the double yellow lines, ran stop signs, and eventually turned into a dead-end parking lot in the area of the Royal Carriage Inn. The woman inside jumped out and took off running and the driver then attempted to swerve around the patrol vehicle, hitting it multiple times.

He then tried to drive over a nearby dirt hill and became stuck. He took off running and was captured. 32-year-old Ryan Wardwell had six misdemeanor warrants and was on parole.

The investigation then led to a nearby hotel room and officials arrested another man, 26-year-old Shea Green, who was trying to escape through the bathroom window. Green had six misdemeanor warrants and four felony warrants.

During the probation search deputies located approximately 83 grams of Fentanyl concealed in a false compartment of an aerosol can, 16 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 3 grams of methamphetamine, drug use paraphernalia, a digital scale and just under $1000 cash.

I think they listed the scale because a scale, on it's own, isn't illegal, but if you have illegal substances, it becomes 'drug paraphernalia'. Just like a bong isn't illegal until you _also_ have pot - then it's a double whammy.

New Bloomfield man charged after chase from Callaway County into Boone county

CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A New Bloomfield man is facing multiple charges after leading law enforcement on a chase through Callaway and Boone County.

A Callaway County prosecutor has charged Russell Miller with resisting arrest, failure to register a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

According to a probable cause statement, on Tuesday a Callaway County deputy attempted to stop a 2009 Pontiac Vibe with plates registered to a Honda Accord. The vehicle drove off and reached speeds in excess of 90 mph during the chase.

Miller eventually stopped the vehicle and ran off on foot before being taken into custody.

According to court documents, deputies found a meth pipe on Miller and a spoon with meth residue in the vehicle.

Upon a Miranda interview, Miller admitted to using the pipe for smoking meth.

Millers is currently on probation for drug possession.

An initial appearance was scheduled for Wednesday and a hearing is scheduled for June 17. A defense attorney is not listed for Miller according to online court documents.

Man accused of lighting woman’s vehicle on fire using blanket
By: Maura Johnson
Posted: May 6, 2022 3:37 PM EDT

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – A man was arrested after he allegedly lit a building manager’s vehicle on fire, according to the probable cause affidavit.

On July 20, 2020, the South Bend Police Department was informed that a 2006 Pontiac Vibe was destroyed by fire while parked on West Riverside Court.

No one was in the vehicle.

Security footage captured a man, later identified as John Schwind, leave his apartment on West Riverside Court, approach the vehicle, and then walk away.

The vehicle was in flames after Schwind walked away from it, according to reports.

No one else was seen near the vehicle just before the fire.

According to surveillance video, at 9:33 p.m. that night, Schwind can be seen leaving his apartment carrying a tan-colored piece of luggage.

He then places the luggage in a dumpster near where the victim’s vehicle is parked.

At 9:45 p.m., Schwind walks back inside his apartment and two minutes later, he leaves it again carrying what looks like a blanket.

He walks directly to the victim’s vehicle and is at it for less than a minute before he walks away and heads toward a picnic table, reports said.

The table has a direct line of sight with the vehicle.

At 9:50 p.m., the first flames can be seen coming from underneath the vehicle, near the vehicle’s front end.

Schwind walks inside the building at 10:01 p.m.

The South Bend Fire Department gets to the scene at 10:33 p.m.

The victim told police of a possible motive Schwind had for the arson, reports said.

According to the victim, a homeless woman had been frequenting Schwind’s apartment and the two had been involved in several arguments that eventually needed police intervention.

The woman was then banned from the property.

The victim is the manager of the building Schwind lives in, which is operated by Oaklawn.

Over the following weeks, Schwind was angry and blamed the victim for what happened with his friend, reports said.

Schwind can be mentally unstable and unpredictable, according to court documents.

A detective made this observation when he interacted with Schwind.

Schwind became angry and belligerent and allegedly threatened to run over the detective, though Schwind does not have access to a vehicle.

Schwind would not be interviewed without an attorney and would not give a statement as to his involvement in the fire, according to court documents.

Investigators believe Schwind ignited the blanket after putting it under the victim’s vehicle and the flames spread to the vehicle.

The vehicle was a total loss from the fire damage.

The vehicle had a value of approximately $4,100 before the fire.

A warrant for Schwind was issued on July 30 and served on May 6.

Schwind was arrested on the charge of arson.

He is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail on a $1,500 bond.

"Schwind can be mentally unstable and unpredictable" One look at his picture coulda told you that

Wisconsin
Complaint: Paramedic said man charged in Whitney Way crash that killed mother ‘smelled like a distillery’
Posted: May 17, 2022 3:16 PM
by Logan Reigstad

MADISON, Wis. — An Edgerton man charged with killing his mother in a drunk driving crash on Madison’s west side last month “smelled like a distillery” and needed help to walk to a nearby ambulance after the crash, according to first responders who responded to the scene.

Thomas Monson, 57, faces charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, eighth-offense operating while under the influence and operating a vehicle while suspended causing death stemming from the early morning crash on Whitney Way near Endeavor Lane on April 28. Monson’s 84-year-old mother died at UW Hospital two hours after the crash from “blunt force trauma of the torso, bilateral upper extremities, and right lower extremity,” according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint alleges surveillance video from Exact Sciences showed the vehicle Monson was driving, a Pontiac Vibe, heading west on Endeavor Lane slowly — as if lost — just after 2:07 a.m. Video then shows the vehicle backing up onto a curb before “taking off fairly quickly” back to the east on Endeavor Lane, running a stop sign at Whitney Way and jumping curbs before slamming into a tree.

In the complaint, first responders at the scene described Monson as needing help from paramedics to walk without falling. He reportedly admitted to having at least two alcoholic beverages to drink.

After being hospitalized, Monson’s speech when talking to medical staff was “slurred and quiet,” and he appeared to be struggling to stay awake, the complaint alleges.

According to the complaint, Monson’s license to drive was suspended two months prior to the crash.

During an initial appearance Monday afternoon, the court set a $50,000 cash bond in the case, online court records show.

Jail records show he remains in the Dane County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

A status conference is scheduled for August 1.

Yep! Totally could be a Matrix.
There are a few frames in the video I linked that shows the steering wheel, but it wasn't clear enough for me to decipher the brand.

Looks like a Matrix to me, from this screen grab, lightened by me.

At 11:14 in the clip, I believe that's the Toyota logo in the center of the steering wheel (rotated about 90-degrees clockwise, with a reflection obscuring the top of stylized T.

Vibe steering wheels display the Pontiac arrowhead logo in the center.

Of course, someone could have intentionally obscured or replaced the steering wheel logo for the film, or edited it in post.
