Sticking throttle 04 Vibe GT

Post by rapier »

Suddenly today my throttle stuck open. It is not the cable. I was on the freeway getting ready for my exit and it didn't slow down. I braked and when I clutched it shot right to redline. I shut it off. The throttle was about 1/4 open. It is not the cable. The cable had slack. I pushed it hard and it would not close. I opened and let it snap a dozen or more times and then it closed to the stop. I drove a mile and it happened again so I did the same thing again and got home

Getting ready to tear into the throttle body but any heads up on what the problem might be would be great.

uncommanded full throttle can make for a wild ride. Don't remember anyone reporting that problem here before.

an advantage of the manual tranny, easy to cut power to the wheels

Did you take it apart yet, and if so, find any likely reason?

I forgot to get back with the answer. First off it was not WOT, it stuck about 1/4 throttle.

The problem was I got this car a few months ago and it has a K&N intake.

I had noticed some electrical tape around the KN tube which I figured somebody put in to help the boot seal. I barely thought about it but did think it was dumb. So anyway I removed the KN tube and looked in at the throttle plate and didn't see a thing out of place. There was obvious that there was no binding of the throttle. I was stumped. Then I looked down and that bit of electrical tape I saw on the tube OD was now a huge doughnut or ring hanging off the KN tube. I have no idea how or why all that tape was on there but instantly I saw that it was probably getting sucked into the throttle body enough to prevent the throttle plate from closing sometimes. I ripped the damn thing off, reinstalled without all the tape which was not needed and problem solved. In fact better than before. Before there was sometimes a bit of hesitation and larger throttle openings and at higher RPM. That mass of tape was restricting the flow I am sure. Probably flapping around.

This is my second GT. The first had 190k when I got it so rarely revved it hard. That was in an accident so I replaced it with this one which has 150k, That KN intake makes the intake loud and it sounds sweet when the R's climb so was into it a bit more but that hesitation had me wary. I'll probably be into the R's more now. Otherwise the intake noise is unobtrusive inside the car. I've no idea if it makes 8HP.
