Replacing Monsoon door speakers - help getting started

Post by Sovtempest »

I've been meaning to replace a burned out door speaker on my family's '05 vibe for a while now, but I'm getting confused where to start. All my searching kept leading around to the genVibe forums, so I figured I'd post the issue directly.

The 2005 Vibe was purchased in '06 from the Pontiac dealership (RIP) on one of those after-lease deals. It came with the Monsoon sound system, which worked fine up until 6 months ago when the passenger door speaker started a lot of buzzing and distortion. It really effects the listening quality, so since then we've just had the balance set mostly to the driver's side; about 3/4 balance to that side and the distortion in the passenger speaker stops.

So I'm looking to replace the door speaker, probably the pair, but I get the picture that because it's the Monsoon system, it's not a simple swap for any 6.5" I can find on Kijiji, or for a good price on Crutchfield. My main questions are:
1. What do I need to look out for to make sure it's compatible with the rest of the Monsoon system,
2. What should I be looking for that would deliver sound quality the same or better as the original Monsoon system, and can I do it for around $100 CAD.
3. If that price point is too low, what are my best options. Strong bass isn't as important as clear mid and treble.

I see Crutchfield will filter my results to be compatible with the '05 vibe, including monsoon, but I'm still not sure what's comparible in experience (or better) than the original system, so I don't know where to start.

This is pretty basic, but I appreciate any insight you can provide. I've been putting this off because I don't know where to start. Thanks.

Unsure what may be causing your issue, but you may want to take off your door panel and check both the speaker and connectors. If you have had a lot of water in the door, it may have rotted the OEM speaker.

1. What do I need to look out for to make sure it's compatible with the rest of the Monsoon system,
-Short of OEM speakers, most aftermarket speakers will work. The OEM speakers are riveted to the door, to remove them requires drilling. To install OEM speakers would have to be riveted back in place, aftermarket speakers will use an adapter ring and require drilling new holes. If you go with aftermerket speakers, make sure they include all the needed installation hardware to "adapt" to new location

2. What should I be looking for that would deliver sound quality the same or better as the original Monsoon system, and can I do it for around $100 CAD.
-A lot of options, since the front doors of the monsoon system have separate tweeters, you can either just replace the mid woofer in the door, or buy a kit that has separate tweeters and woofers and replace both.

3. If that price point is too low, what are my best options. Strong bass isn't as important as clear mid and treble.
-If you just replace the woofers, these will work, but they already have a built in tweeter. The tweeter will not do much as the Monsoon system filters will already send the highs to the OEM tweeters.

Here is a link to other information. Unsure what options you have available in Canada, but this may provide some insight
