69-8601tr on base model

Post by Lucky42 »

Told you guys I had it figured out, took me a while to actually getting around to it; full time job and a 2 year old......

Anyway, here's pics and a brief write up:

Items needed besides your k&n kit

(1) 5/8" silicone 90 degree elbow
(1) 3/4" to 1/2" PEX reducing coupling
(1) 2.5" to 3" air intake coupler/reducer

Start off by disconnecting your negative battery cable, then following the instructions for diss-assembly of all your factory intake components; somewhere around step 20 you'll run into a few things the base model doesn't have, mostly emissions related, evap purge hoses and whatnot. Ignore instructions for anything not applicable. the K&N mounts go in like stock, but I did have to bend the c- bracket a bit so it would line up nice. Install the mass air sensor on the new intake tube.
So, once the stock airbox and the large upper pcv have been removed, take the 2.5 to 3" reducer portion of the coupler and slip it over the throttle body:

I say slip it, but I actually had to boil mine in a pot of water for a couple minutes to get it flexible enough to stretch into place.
Next, cut down the reducing coupling included with the kit so it's just another reducer to fit between the typhoon and the 3" coupler, install that on the typhoon:

At this point, couple the typhoon to the throttle body, without tightening it, then bolt the typhoon to the c-bracket, I had a little evap sensor I bolted to the big bracket that came with the typhoon, tighten everything down, and install the filter.
Now, for the pcv line I just cut 3" off one leg of the 4" x 5/8" i.d. elbow, stuck in the reducing coupler, and connected it to the typhoon with the silicone hose included in the kit; 4" of new elbow was just enough to make the length you need. might wanna pick up a longer hose in the future.

Car nocked at idle for 6 or 7 minutes, but then it smoothed out and its been fine since. No engine light, yet anyway.
It's important to disconnect the battery cable so the ECM knows it needs to relearn a new baseline tune.

Thanks for the compliment, but apparently, too soon. car threw p0171 last night. lean.

obviously it's running lean from the giant new filter. unfortunately the ecm can only make so many adjustments before it throws the code. gonna clear the code to see if it'll make more adjustments; car is 20k overdue for new o2 sensors anyway, so I might swap those out too before I call it a complete failure and put the stock airbox back in.

FAIL........

sensor data while driving shows engine hits over 50:1 a/f ratio at wide open throttle, before WOT actually. instantly throws code. stock parts are back in. does the Cosmo intake have a smaller tube, or a bigger pcv provision, or what?

What year car? I don't think you have an AF Sensor on the car, It's an O2 Sensor. So any AFR information is suspect. However running lean means you have some un-metered air getting into the system. In other words you have an air/vac leak somewhere in you setup. Any air/vac line before the MAF stay before the MAF on the SRI. Any air/vac lines after the MAF stay after the MAF on the SRI. Also check and make sure you MAF is sealed to the SRI.

You can always hook it up again and check for leaks with some carb cleaner. Goodluck!

05 vibe base model

denso aftermarket says the upstream o2 is an a/f sensor, it is 4 wire so i a$$ume its wideband

everything seemed pretty snug, so many other things need attention, don't think i'm going to get back to this for a while....
