03 GT Black stripping above doors? Please assist

Hi all, bought my kids an 03 Vibe GT. I work a ton of hours and haven't been able to keep up on everything. My wife said that some black stipping above the drivers side doors along the roof was flying in the wind when on the Freeway. I got home and looked at the car and saw the stripping was off the track, and the passenger side was completely gone. It seems like the stripping is supposed to start at the top of the windshield to the start of the roof rack.

Does anyone know if that stripping is crucial, possibling keeping rain out of the top of the winshield jam, or is it just a sport cosmetic item.
