Hella horn on an 09 vibe

Post by vibe_mike »

Hey, I'm changing my factory horn to Hella horns. I got everything wired and bolted in, but need to change the relay. Does anyone know where the horn relay is located on an 09 vibe??
Thanks for anyones help.

you want to replace the OEM relay? why? Everything OEM stays.
If you are adding hella horns and wiring them according to their instructions you should be adding another relay.

I was thinking about doing this mod to my 09 Vibe also. I'll assume you keep the one OEM relay for one of the Hella horns, THEN add another relay for the second horn. This is due to the OEM relay not being able to handle the current draw of TWO horns? Explain if possible :?

To get full use and sound out of the hella horns you need to add a relay.
A relay pulls power for the horns direct from the battery but uses the stock wiring and relay as a "trigger"
So you press your horn it sends a signal down threw the oem wiring the oem wiring is plugged in to the relay the relay is triggered and pulls power from the battery and sends full power to the hella horns.
The below is not for the horns most would be wiring but it shows how to wire everything.

thanks for the diagram, that helps.

i was actually talking to someone else, and they said the relay that comes with the horns, is for if you want to add a new switch, and not run it off of your oem horn. i tried it that way, just wiring it to the oem switch and oem relay, and they are pretty loud (without the hella relay). im going to wire in the hella relay (thanks for the diagram) and let you guys know how it sounds and if its worth it to do all that extra work.

You can wire them without the relay that hella supplies. I did it that way on my vibe. They were loud. This time with my Mazda I wired them with the relay and they are super freaking loud.
I recommend that if you have the time to wire them with the relay, do it.

I second that, it's worth taking the extra time to use the relay.

Oh hey, I did this mod on my car. And I cannot for the life of me remember what we did, but we definitely took our time with it. I'll have to ask Chris because he tends to take the lead on the electronics mods. :p Sounds awesome, BTW. Though I don't really think they're that loud, but everyone around me goes "HOLY CRAP SO LOUD" so I guess I'm just deaf.
