lean code after cold air intake install???

Post by lilpjp »

ok well im new here so ill just put this short and sweet........ I just recently installed a cold air intake (that i sort of pieced together from Autozone for fun  ) on my o6 vibe base model, and I am getting a lean code. could it just be that the intake it isn't made for the vibe or is there another problem?????? can someone give me some input on this :?: :?:

You have an air leak. Normally around the MAF, coupling on the TB then there always the issue with the intake manifold gasket (which comes to light when someone adds an intake). SO it being one you pieced together it may be very leaky and basically a Frankenstein.

Do yourself a favor put the stock air box in and buy a AEM or K&N drop in. Or get on e-bay, cosmo racing and buy a real SRI or CAI before you ruin your engine. There are very little gains from an intake other than some noise.

Thanks for the input Salsa it will help greatly....... and I actually did put my factory air box back on because i didnt want to mess anything up. So I am probably gonna buy a cosmo or injen intake to put on and see how that goes for me..... any advice for when I install it???

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But the dbw and CAI even with a reputable CAI may still cause a lean issue. I'm almost positive of this. Which is why I put a short ram on my fathers trix to avoids this issue. The short rams don't typically have this issue on the dbw.

I'm not really sure about that Keith, it maybe true. When you get down to it the intakes do very little from the dyno results I've seen on 1zz engines, maybe 2-3 HP over stock.

Install suggestion: Disconnect the battery both side before you start. Note where the vacuum lines connect to the stock system in reference to the MAF. What lines attach before the MAF stay before the MAF, What attaches after the MAF stays after the MAF. You may need a small filter for the Valve cover tube if it doesn't attach to the Stock Throttle Body. (Some years it attaches to the TB and others it attach on the Intake Tube before the TB). Install the SRI/CAI and re-attach the vacuum lines to it using the MAF as a reference. Reconnect the Battery and start,

Yea I've read a lot of those. And dnm hates it when people clean the MAF. I'm not sure if any of this is definitive againest the CAI. Strange how it's only on the DBW cars. I think the MAF is the same but the O2 is different.

On NewCelica.org they dyno'd different intakes on the 1zz engine. There was less than a 2% difference between stock and the different CAIs. Willing to bet a Drop in K&N will work just as well.

Thats what i was wondering... thanks for all the help guys but i think i might just stick with the drop in k&n filter since it would be about the same gain in hp

I have a 2010 Vibe and got the drop in K & N, have one in my wife's 2008 G6 too and have put them in various other vehicles, I would definitely say you get the 2% gain for sure and based on MPG readout's on the G6 at least a 10-15% improvement in gas mileage as well.

I'm getting a Bank 1 Running Too Lean error. I just installed a K&N SRI (capped the inlet on the tube and put a breather filter on the breather tube). I cleaned the MAF when I got the error (disconnected the battery while I was doing that). The error didn't come back for about a day. My car's running the way it usually does, but it's stressing me out.

You need to read the 2nd post of this thread. Running a engine lean is not good.
