rooftop cargo boxes?

Post by daninboulder »

howdy again. Now I'm wondering what the best rooftop box would be. My 2005 has pretty short side rails, so my load bars are 30" apart. Should I avoid the long ski type boxes, as the nose would may stick too far out front? (wind issue I would think). That is an appealing option as it'd be for mostly clothes anyway, and may leave enough room on my rack for a bike. otherwise I'm looking at a Yak Space Cadet or something, but would like opinions on the long thin type cargo box, thnx-D

I am curious as well, since I am taking a road trip vacation this summer and could use some additional storage space. Looking forward to what others have to say.

If you have a sunroof, then you will need a container with a shorter length. The Thule that I have works well from that standpoint. I am able to fit a 3 person tent, 2 person tent, 3 collapsible chairs, drop cloths, camp tools(hatchet, collapsible saw) and a table canopy. Drove through some pretty intense thunerstorms on our trip out West, and everything stayed dry. Quite happy with this unit.

I tried 3 different boxes on my 03. MY opinion, is unless it sits off to one side, don't use one. Since the bars sit so far back, almost every Sears and yakima box I tested did not allow the trunk to open, unless it was a small box sitting on one side of the roof. All the Sears boxes caused the antenna to fold down, then when the trunk opened it dented the trunk "spoiler" area. I had the same issue trying to put a bike carrier on the rack, till I finally gave up and mounted new cross bars further forward and higher, then put the bike carriers on. I do not believe the roof rack -stock - was meant to carry a full size piece of equipment, but if you could find something real short, that dodged the antenna and the moon roof, you may be able to work it out.

Sears X-Cargo box.Don't know what the size is as I bought it used on Craigslist. Fits on the stock bars and the trunk opens/closes with no contact. The antenna has to come off but it just screws off/on. Don't have sunroof so I don't know if it would interfere with that.
