As I am driving at 40-45 mph, and i let off the gas, even a little bit, i get this strange quick low pitch whining noise. It doesn't happen all the time but it's a little scary. I searched this topic and don't get much back. I am almost out of warranty and I'm sure they won't be able to reproduce the sound if I take it in. Any ideas..maybe when I call them I can tell them what to check!
I'm sorry, I have an automatic transmission. I guess this problem is driving me crazy! I read that it may be the gearbox bearings? Anyways, still taking it in tomorrow before the warranty runs out in 80 miles!
Thanks for the input here, mac99d and circuitsmith.I have a similar sound issue when coasting in gear, and am having my tranny oil changed today (Haven't changed since 70,000kms ago). It just started about 2 weeks ago - metallic rattling sound when I let off the gas and decelerate in gear. Fingers crossed there isn't a bearing issue for now. (It's an expensive time of year lol).

Car is still in the shop for the gear box "whining". Of course, they can't reproduce the noise. They did say I had a bad hub bearing and are going to fix that but I know that is not what it is. Just because they can't hear the noise, they won't just check the gear or check to see if a bearing is bad? I am going to ask them that when they call today.
They would probably have to pull the trans to check it if they can't hear the noise. Do you know exactly the circumstances when you hear the noise, and do you think you can make it happen? I had an issue with my Mustang that they could not duplicate, so I took the service guy for a ride and showed him exactly what it was. They were just not driving it "right". Then he realized there really was a problem and they dove in to try and find it.Good luck on it!

I have been having the same problem for a while now, and just now had the guts to start researching it. I have an 06 base Vibe with an automatic transmission. 50,000 miles. In my case, it seems to happen anywhere between 30+ MPH (but it doesn't happen all the time). If I take my foot off the accelerator, I get a whine/moan that typically lasts for about a second. However, some times it will continue until I step on the gas again. One time I was even able to get out of the car, pop the hood, and listen to it. Hard to tell where it was coming from. Either the transmission, a belt, or something hooked up to the belts as far as I can tell. I can take video if you'd like to hear it. It's quite noticeable to me but my wife never notices it.Once I let my foot off the gas and the noise starts, it stays consistent... meaning RPM or car speed doesn't effect it as I coast to a stop.I'd be very interested to hear what your mechanics find. Please keep this thread updated.Just a side note, my car was taken in for the solenoid recall, but the part did not fall under the recall. Thanks!Kirk
Well, I have my car back. Mechanics could not hear the noise. I know it's there. Seems like humidity and rain stop the noise from happening. Now that it's dry out again, I can hear it. It doesn't happen all the time. They fixed a hub bearing but that defintely wasn't it. My warranty is now expired! But I am going to call the warranty company and ask them since I documented the noise before it expired, can I still get it fixed under warranty? I am also going to get the transmission fluid changed and have the check the transmission filter. I will keep this updated. Seems alot of people have this problem after more research on the web but no answers!
Just wanted to add notes to this. Yesterday the noise made itself known as I pulled into my driveway. I put the car in park and it went away. Put the car in D and it came back, put it in neutral and it went away, put it in 2, then 1 and the noise was there throughout.I'm really at a loss as to what this could be. As I said before, engine speed has no effect on the sound. Does that rule out accessories or the belt that is on them? My transmission shifts fine, I haven't had any problems with the car whatsoever.I didn't have my camera on me so I didn't get video but next time it happens and I have a chance to pop the hood, I will be taking video and I will be trying the ole long screwdriver up against different things to see if I can feel or hear exactly where the noise is coming from. Thanks,Kirk
