Transmission fluid change on my 09 Vibe AWD & 05 Honda CR-V

Post by Airmack »

Question, my wifes has a 05 Honda CR-V hit 46,000 or so & the dummy light came on, saying that we need to take it in to have it looked over for its scheduled maintenance. So I call the local dealer & they say "oh we need to change oil, transmission, front/rear diff etc etc" $400 some odd dollars it will cost. Now I all ways heard that 80,000 was the mark to get it changed but a local mechanic said since it is CVT then 40,000 on it is like 60,000 on the steel belts. So at what mark does a CVT transmission need changed & is the Vibe AWD CVT?

When you say your CR-V has a CVT transmission do you mean a Continously Variable Transmission ? Because I'm pretty sure the CR-V never had such a transmission, a 2005 should have a 5 speed automatic transmission.

The '09 Vibe recommends transmission fluid change every 60k miles under severe service. If your owner's manual is anything like mine, it is WRONG on what fluid it requires. It says T-IV, but that is for the '03-'08 only! The '09 and up requires Toyota World Standard (WS) transmission fluid (check your dipstick). It can be pretty daunting trying to find this stuff anywhere, but despite what Toyota says this fluid does have substitutes. Some confusion might come from the fact that Full Throttle Performance Parts has a synthetic transmission fluid called CVT that is a suitable substitute for Toyota WS, even though the '09 Vibe doesn't have a CV Transmission.Amsoil full synthetic ATF works in place of WS also.A small company named WolfsHead makes a universal synthetic transmission fluid that is suitable in place of WS too. I bought this for my '09 Vibe, mostly because it was fairly cheap (less than $4 per quart(compared to Amsoil's $12 per quart)) and I was able to track down a part store a short driving distance away from my home that carries it. I did an approximately 75% transmission fluid exchange with this stuff and I've had absolutely no problems with it at all thus far. That was 2 days ago, so I'm crossing my fingers.
