could somebody do a little more picture involved write up on this? I'm looking at doing this in my bottom-up ($-wise) quest to fix my 0420 code. Would be great to have a how-to. Techren, your photos already are a help so that I can at least see an idea of what I'll be getting into, thanks!
https://picasaweb.google.com/y...tlinki think there maybe a how to on corolla site or matrix site... as for 420 code, i would bet my money that your cat is dieing and either needs to be replaced, or be fooled by the trick. i did a how to on disabling that 420 code a while back too. still works. for 4$ you cant beat it i also had 420 before doing this intake gasket, it improved my idle problem but didnt solve the 420.
Oh noes. I feel bad, I just did this a few days ago but didn't take any photos because I figured there was already a How-to!! It's really simple tho, about as straight forward as you would imagine. It took me probably about an hour (not including washing/drying my intake manifold - optional).-Disconnect battery.-Remove the black tube from air box to throttle body.-Unbolt (4) bolts that hold TB to intake. DO NOT disconnect coolant lines that go thru the TB (unnecessary). Carefully set the TB to the side out of the way but not stressing the coolant lines/wire hareness.-Remove the two tubes that attach to the intake manifold.-Unbolt (6) bolts/nuts that hold the manifold on. There are 4 bolts and then the 2 nuts that also secure the wires that run along the top of the manifold.-Now its free, wiggle it loose and you should be able to remove it without messing with your belt, radiator lines, etc.-Remove the old gasket, clean the surfaces, then install the new gasket.-Reassembly is reverse. Proper torque is 22 ft-lbs.-Be sure all vaccuum hoses are reconnected and in the right spot.I also drenched my manifold in carb cleaner and ran HOT water thru it for about 30 minutes in my sink because mine was caked oil and carbon deposit. If you do this, be sure it is dry before installing it/starting the car. Here is a link to the PDF for the TSB from Toyota that details it as well. Ingore the coolant business unless you feel like doing a flush while you are it it.
