High Idle even after warmed up?

Post by frankiemenz »

Anyone noticed in these colder ambient temperatures, on newer Gen Vibes an extended high idle? My base 2010 idles high on the highway in slow moving morning commute traffic. It stays around 1500 rpms even when warmed up. I notice when I stop it stays high until I turn off a few accessories esp. heater fan, doesn't matter if I am on defrost or vents really, I had considered A/C compressor idle up going on. Is it because the throttle body has a thermostatic idle up coil, similar to the older toyotas, and in extreme cold ambient temps that coil cools off even with hot coolant flowing through the throttle body, that throttle body is up high and in front of the engine with a mighty cold breeze across front of car. I am talking temps of 25 degree F or less. I never noticed this until it really got cold. It seems even when I pull in Garage at night it stays idled up a minute or 2, I am assuming until hot coolant re-warms the throttle body?? Thanks for input from anyone with a 1.8 liter newer gen vibe.---Frank

I notice that too. On my way home from work there's a 7km highway run followed by 3km of city. When the temp is below 0C by the time I reach the lights the Vibe's 'almost' at normal temp but still idles at 1600-1500. Once the temp gauge reaches 'normal' it idles at it's usual 700! But it only seems to do this when below zero.

I think maybe the PCM increses idle during cold temps either for more Batt. volts or for better heat output??? Mine does this but once it's really warmed up or on warmer days like star deceiver pointed out it's not really noticeable. Otherwise I don't have many complaintsm I like the mileage compared to my Tacoma, lol.

Two of us at work have 2003 Vibes with the high idles and code set. There is a toyota bulletin concerning the intake manifold gasket replacement. The first Vibe has had its gasket replaced which I am about to do the same. Will let you know about the outcome. I have had a code set about lean readings. I tried the O2 sensor with no luck, I am going to try the intake gasket next as the bulletin says. Also noticed that Dorman offers the intake manifold, does anyone know of a problem with the intake manifolds?

That's some good 411 on the intake gaskets, I saw another thread about lean codes during engine warm up and intake gasket replacement with an improved gasket. I know one member bought that gasket from Toyota for a pretty good walk in off the street price, like $9.00 I think?? I have no codes or rough idle, just a slightly elevated idle when it seems like it should be warmed up enough to be at base idle. Let us know how you make out though!!
