Had this happen and could not open hatch. Even used the key to make sure it was being unlocked. That was found to be ok. Dealership covered the repair under warranty and replaced the entire cable /latch mechanism. Precious little white clips break when removing the plastic interior cladding. Get them from a dealer before you try this yourself if out of warranty. You'll need at least 4 - 6 . And that is being careful as there are about a dozen holding the hatch interior window plastic cladding. The fix after the parts in your hands is less than an hour and the hatch will work again like new. For some reason the cable was stretched so badly that it would not release and no adjustment to the cable helped. Don't know what the cost of the cable part that dealer ordered is ,but probably not real cheap.
