Void warrenty if I use 5w-30 instead of 5w-20

Post by whytea »

Just as the title says will i run into warrenty issues if i use 5w-30 on my 09. my mechanic buddy said that there will be no issues with the engine if i 5-30 but i know how some dealerships are.the reason i ask is because 5-20 has got to be one of the hardest to find at a good price.

Nope, you shouldn't have any trouble... Check in the owner's manual and see if it says it is OK to use it, I bet it does... Mechanically it won't cause any issues either. I have a Hyundai that calls for 5w20 yet only one dealer I've been to has actually put 5w20 in it, they always tend to use 5w30. Hasn't hurt a thing to run 5w30 in it.It's an odd weight, they mainly use it for fuel economy reasons as it's just a little bit lighter.

5W20 is easy to find. Walmart carries the stuff at a decent price compared to Canadian tire. I have two other cars, one takes 5W20 and the other 5W30 and I can easily tell the difference in the oil when draining it. The 5W20 comes out like water compared to the 5W30.As for the warranty issue, the dealer could hang any engine lubrication issue on you not using the recommended oil. Might be purely unrelated failure but if they have evidence that the maintenance schedule was not followed they can use that against you. I'm assuming that they will ask for your records of oil change frequency (oil and filter bills...etc).
