This is scary. Photobucket's DNS was hacked. I noticed a bunch of images posted on the genvibe forum no longer appear and when I looked further, I noticed it was anyone that used photobucket.com. I went to photobucket and got the following message:----------When a DNS is hacked, the URL you "think" you're going to is actually someone elses server. At that point, you have no clue what that server is trying to do with you while you're there.

Photobucket wasn't hacked; there's nothing to worry about. DNS is basically like a phonebook. You give it a name (photobucket.com) and it gives you a number (209.17.70.11). What happened was that someone "hacked" into a DNS server and changed the number (IP address) to photobucket.com. Anybody that used that DNS server was given the wrong IP address, and thus were unable to retrieve any photobucket images. It looks like the "poisoned" entry never made it up to a root DNS server and spread very far.Yes, I'm a nerd.

Unfortuneately, I share your nerdom...but giving the thread the name "West Coast DNS servers hacked and http://www.photobucket.com name resolutions are directing requests to the wrong IP" just seemed to long.

I totally agree, I wasn't trying to give you a hard time, I was just trying to reassure people who seemed worried that their accounts might be messed up. Didn't seem to really work though. Oh well.
