New vs old.There are 18,000 miles on my Vibe. Only driven in great California weather! I think this is the first time its ever been changed.

did you get hit with any smoke from wildfires?did you check you engine air filter too?how much did you pay for the replacement filter?

No wildfires. Just good ol California commuting.I didn't check the air filter - it should have been replaced at the last dealer service (3K miles ago). I bought from an AC Delco supplier online. Novasource gave me the link. It was only about $27.

What no wildlife or small dogs? I always find an assortment of insects and vegetation in mine. Imagine, some people don't believe in these filters!!!I'm sold on the benefits, it's not that big an expense.

Here is a couple of pictures of my cabin filter that has just over 32,000 miles on it. Most of my miles are highway (94 miles round trip to work and back). DAMN! That coulda' been what I was breathing in!! Jim

Where is the in-cabin filter located?Could it be in a bad location and picking up air from a dusty area in the engine bay/tire well?

The filter assembly is behind the glove box, but the intake is elsewhere (bottom of the windshield I believe)

Most of what you are looking at on your filters is most likley mold...mine smelt like a wet dirty dog..replaced it with a 3m 20x20x1 Allergen Furnace Filter...got 4 Filters out of one..only 16bucks CDN

Spray the system with Lysol every now and then to get rid of any mold. IT will keep your air smelling nice and fresh too.

I washed the car today and change the oil to mobil1. After which I check the cabin filter, It was full of dirt & mold the nastist thing I have seen in a long time.I beat it againist the fence for awhile, then sparyed it off with the garden hose. after that I got out the clorox bleach spray and soaked it for awhile, then sprayed it off with the garden hose again and dried it with a old hair dryer. Now it looks like new again, So I put it back in. I'll keep in eye on it, to make sure the mold doesnt come back!But it was much cheaper to clean it then replace it.

For everyone's info, the Matrix and Vibe use different cabin air filters. I had to take the Toyota part back and order the Pontiac part. The difference is slight, but no way to modify.My filter looks better at 30,000 miles than most shown here -- breathe clean Oregon air and park in the garage!

Be sure to push down on the clips to open it up. To me it looked like any clip that you pop open. Of course I broke the left clip but it still snaps fine so I'm not worried. Just checked mine 31000 miles. My wifes damn cats must sleep right on the intake for this as there was about 3lbs of hair stuck in it.

just wanted you all to know that I just changed my cabin air filter (2,000 miles later than I suggest), and it looked horrible. I still recommend every 10,000 miles with furnace filters bought at the hardware store.....easy to cut......cheap to replace

Is $30 too much to ask?Well, thanks for asking! I think that $30 is a rediculous price to pay. Secondly, I would seriously think about getting your OEM filter out of there if you have left it in there for a year. Mine was disgusting after 6 months. Thirdly, by buying a furnace filter on the cheap, I know exactly what the MERV rating is for the filter. That's Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (and no, I did not have to consult an HVAC specialist to figure that out), and lets me know exactly (down to the micron) what particles my filter is capturing. I'm sure that type of info is also located in the Pontiac owner's manual on the filter that came with the car...............not.

I am now at 32K miles and have vacuumed/rinsed/lysol-ed my filter every 10K, but it is now falling apart and ready for replacement. I park outside and get all kinds of pollen and other organic material coming through the fresh-air intake, so the filter is absolutely necessary. I don't see a problem with cutting down a $16 micro-pleated home furnace filter down to size--it is the same material as the Delco filter. Just be sure to use the highest micron rated one.And I broke the clips, too, but can still latch the filter door.

I went out on a quest to find a cabin air filter for Kari's car this afternoon. Found one at Pep Boys, Purolator brand. Took it out of the box and meh, it's alright but I see the price tag is $30 anyway. Maybe it was me, but it didn't seem as sturdy as the GM one, so I went down the street to the Pontiac dealer and bought her one of those instead for $35+tax. If the Purolator was $15-$20, I would have bought it, but not for $30. Price gouging suckas! The parts guy at the dealer even commented on it "hmm, there's not a lot there for that thing to be thirty five bucks!"
