Pontiac OEM Bike Rack discontinued?

Post by navydave »

I was looking to get the crossbars and 2 GM 12495021 - Bicycle Carrier - Fork Mounts, with my tax return and my local dealer said the bike carriers were discontinued. I just tried to order them online from an different place, http://www.midwaypartsteam.com/ and they cancelled my order, saying they were discontinued and couldn't get them. I already have the crossbars on the way, shipped and now am worried I wont be able to find the GM bike rack. Does anyone know where i can still get a pair. I know I can use aftermarket ones, but since I already ordered the crossbars, they'd need to mount on those. Any suggesstions?PS. I ordered the crossbars from pontiacpartspeople.com and if I were to return them, it would be a 20% restocking fee, so that would be costly. I will if I have to, but I'd rather find a solution with the factory crossbars first.

it's gm standard cross rails see if they will sell it under any other model brand... I think the only other way would be to get an after market attachment. I do think they will mount to the GM cross rails though.I am sure someone can tell you if I am right or wrong on this.

I did find this http://www.bikerackshops.com/TU532.html, so if I can cant find the factory ones, I may able to use these adapters for other options if I had to.

The "GM Utility Bars" appear to be identical to the Thule cross bars and have the same dimensions - I believe they are just rebadged for GM. Any bike rack designed to fit the Thule bars should work fine with the crossbars you already have ordered.

I found out the hard way I could have saved $100 for the identical ski rack without the GM badge.

The GM bars are rebadged Thule bars. There are a ton of car manufacturers that will do this. There shouldn't be any reason to have an adapter. Your best bet would be to go to Thule.com and order straight from them. As a retailer for Thule, I know that they stand behind their product and are wonderful to work with.

I prefer a fork mount, where you take the front wheel off. It doesn't touch your frame at all. It depends on your bike too. If you have disc brakes, you need a rack that will fit those. The Thule Peloton is a great one. It's actually Thuleracks.com http://www.thuleracks.com/prod...u=517

I believe I might have found one on ebay. Does this look like the same one for the vibe? The description shows the correct Gm aprt number...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...l1259Here is all the listings I found, looks like all from the same dealer...http://search.stores.ebay.com/...ZWD1SPS. Thanks, lovemyraffe, that thule rack might be an option also :-). Looks like the ebay ones are a little cheaper though. I emailed the seller to doublecheck if its the same generic GM bike carrier that fits the vibe also, to be sure. Waiting for a response.

It does look like the same one. But look closer at the shipping costs. $60 for shipping! That's insane. Rarely do I charge that much for shipping. IM me and I will see how much I could get you one for.

Hmm, I'm showing $20.26 for shipping. Maybe because its from Massachusetts to Maine.

Hey lovemyraffe,I might have to take you up on the offer for the Thule's. Do you have a pic of them? Are they the Peloton's or something else.

I use the Yakima wheel fork. It's kinda hard to see in the pic but the wheels are between the two bikes.

Well, It looks like I didnt get the regular factory cross bars that usually come with the 03-04's from the factory. I got http://www.gmpartscenter.net/P....html. Part#12498684, but on the instructions inside it says part#12489230. I thought I was ordering the other ones. Not really what I wanted, but I guess it opens up other options. Any suggestions to go with these type of cross bars?
