HIGH IDLE --- AGAIN?!

Post by W2ZXN »

I know this issue has been brought up repeatedly on this forum, but I figure what's one more post? I have 03 BASE and it's constantly idling at a high rate, not just at startup. At startup in the summer, it usually jumps to about 1800 to 1900 RPM for about 6 minutes and then goes down to around 800 unless I slip it into neutral in a parking lot or something and then it goes right back up to around 1800/1900. In the winter now, it's jumping to about 2200RPM (and now it has started to misfire, so I bought new plugs AGAIN, and I'm going to see what the last ones look like)... My question is this... Couldn't this be a flaw in the computer software? And even if it is a flaw in the software, is there anything that can be done about it?

I know Toyota has a TSB on this, and it requires the ECU to be changed,or reflashed.I seem to remember someone here doing that and it didn't fix the problem.

Secondly, I noticed that the TSB was for manual transmissions and I have an automatic. However you are probably right-on and so I will go see a dealer and find out if they can flash my ECM. However, it was brought to my attention, outside of GenVibe that perhaps I should check for any vacuum leaks, so I'm going to check that one out before I waste my time and a dealer's time. I changed my spark plugs today too. Not that I think that has anything to do with the problem to extent that it lives on, but just a good idea anyway. The plugs that I took out all seemed to be in decent condition with the exception of the third one from the left, which was just completely shot. That makes me very nervous. I don't know a great deal about cars when it comes to being under the hood, but I'm pretty sure that the spark plugs should wear fairly evenly unless there's a problem. Now, in answer to your question, NO. It does not always drop down after it is warm, but yet it sometimes does. The idle does drop when you put it into gear, but sometimes I can drive the 31 miles to work and as soon as I put it into PARK, the idle shoots right back up. This is killing my gas milage right now, lol.

Does it idle low or stall when you put it in gear with your foot on the brake? Also, have you made any major additions or changes to your cars electrical system recently?

500-600 RPM. It will idle low when in gear or in park. Nothing major done to the electrical system. It just started happening the past few weeks. It will idle low if I'm running the defroster (which will run the a/c compressor), which is bizarre cuz normally that will make the engine run higher.

Your problem sounds like the IAC valve. From what you described, the IAC valve should step up the idle a hundred RPM when the defrost mode is engaged.
