I don't mind the look of the roof mount (your's looks very nice Ironman) but I just dont want to lift my bike to the roof all the time. I'll never haul more than one at a time so I decided to go with the inside mount. I'm building my own with a Yakima fork mount and a piece of 14 Ga. steel plate. The real problem with it is that with the length of some bikes, you have to put them in at an angle so if you have more than one bike to haul they won't fit. I'll post some pics of mine when it's done. I need to get some bolts for the cargo track. The factory ones are too short. It's not a pretty contraption, but by golly it'll work... I think.

Is there a reason for the backward mount?

I bet it's so he can still open the back without hitting the rack. If he had it the other way the end of the tray would stick out past the end of the roof and he would hit it opening the back. I got 2 nice scratches on my hatch that way.

I had to mount the rack backwards so that I could open the hatch. I thought about putting the bike inside however, road bikes don't usually come with quick release seat posts and is too tall (about 3 inches or so). The position of the seat is too important to fuss with and too much of a pain to always remove. Besides, I need the space in the car for my race gear. I had thought about rigging the interior rail system for a Thule wheel mount. I saw someone post a pic of a similar idea with a fork mount. Overall I like the way the car looks with the bike on the roof and enjoy when I catch others staring at my setup. I really don’t have to worry about anyone steeling my bike because I don’t ever leave it unattended and if they’re going to take it, it doesn’t matter where she’s mounted.

quote:... however, road bikes don't usually come with quick release seat posts and is too tall (about 3 inches or so)...That's true. I can't imagine having to take the seat off without quick release. I guess I'll have to see how well this works once I get it done. I might wind up switching to the roof rack if the interior rack is too much trouble.
