Speaker and HU Advice

Post by SimpleVibe »

The Story…..I have a 2003 Pontiac Vibe w/ Moons&Tunes (factory HU, factory 200W amp w/ 6 speakers). As far as I can tell all the speakers are blown except the tweeters. Not sure why they are blown. I don’t think the HU or amp are bad. It still gets loud but sounds bad. I don’t know which route to take. Most of the stuff I read is from people who cannot find a cheap (I don’t know what the definition of cheap is) 2 ohm speaker or from people who want major sound (bass boxes, extra amps, i.e. house shattering sound).I came up with the following possibilities. What would be the best? I am looking for good quality sound and medium volume not extreme volume.1)Replace factory door speakers with 2 ohm speakers (Infinity Reference 6022i). Keep factory HU and factory amp. ($200 for 4 speakers)2)Replace factory door speakers with 4 ohm speakers (Infinity Reference 6012i). Keep factory HU and factory amp. ($140 for 4 speakers) Disadvantage - Lower volume.3)Replace factory door speakers with 2 ohm speakers (Infinity Reference 6022i). Replace factory HU and keep factory amp. Need line leveler. ($200 speakers for 4 speakers, 4)Replace factory door speakers with 4 ohm speakers (Infinity Reference 6012i). Replace factory HU and bypass factory amp. Need crossovers for pillar tweeters. ($140 speakers for 4 speakers, I know new speakers are a must. But how important would a new HU be.Give me your opinions.

I've always had a good boost in sound performance, bass, acoustic and vocals all around from Infinity Reference speakers on stock HU's. Of course you will get more amps out of an aftermarket unit, but for stock, which is what I have and will stay with. I will be upgrading to the Infinity Reference. I had them in my last 3 cars and loved the quality. All around a good quality speaker that hits all the right notes.

Don't worry about 2 ohms. Theroetically 2 ohms is best for the M&T amp, but any good 4 ohm speaker will work too. Depending on the amp design, a 4 ohm speaker may make the amp more stable, and less likely to go into distortion.
