Hello Everyone, My wife and I recently bought a new Matrix, and we are having mucho problems with the A/C. It wouldn' t cool sufficiently, then after a recent issue that i am at odds with Toyota, the condenser was replaced and now it is so cold we have to turn it off. But a problem now, is the air stops blowing out the ducts while the A/C is on and we have traveled about 30 miles. We are wondering if anyone else is having similar problems.
Hi magoo! Sounds like you may have a leak in your system or it was never properly charged. A trip to the dealer is what you need and the dealer will hook up the AC machine and check it out. There is a sticker under the hood that tells the dealer what the systems pressure should be and how much refrigerant it holds. The system protects itself and will not even turn on if it drops too low in refrigerant. Not sure if this is happening to you now or not...
When the air stops blowing out the ducts, does it stop suddenly, as if the fan just shut off, or is it a gradual thing where the airflow drops off but the fan runs? When you turn off the AC, does the airflow start up again right away, or does the airflow come back gradually, or not until the car has been turned off for a while?Do you see water under the car after the AC has been runniing (ok) or notice any dampness in the front passenger carpet (not ok) ?
AC too cold? i wonder if toyota has a new part they put in or is it something wrong they did...i could use too cold ac Welcome to genvibe! joatmon is asking some great questions, they should help narrow it down to what it is
Joatman, thanks for your questions. The air quits blowing thru the ducts after about 30 miles of traveling and it is a gradual thing when the air stops blowing. Sometimes I can turn off the AC and the air will come back thru the ducts, and sometimes the car has to be turned off for a while. There is water coming out of the drain tube. This problem never existed until the condenser was replaced. the story behind that was we constantly complained to the dealer that it was never getting cool inside the car. One day as we were returning to San Antonio from Corpus Christi the AC suddenly quit cooling. To make a long story short, supposedly, a small rock hit the condenser causing all the freon to leak out. The dealer replaced the condenser, and wants to charge me for half of it because it was not a factory defect - so they say. At any rate, after they replaced it, it gets colder than the north pole inside the car, but now we have the vent problem. This has been on going for about a month. I returned the car to them last week with a few choice words about this. Today, they called and said they found the problem and replaced parts and GUARANTEED that the car is fixed - we'll see. The AC has been an issue since we bought the car in April.

We Vibers have our own battle with rocks and paint, so I know that rocks are always pelting unsuspecting vibes out there, but I haven't heard of anyone having their AC condensor dmaged by a rock. Perhaps the grill on a Matrix is such that it allows more rocks to pass through , but I doubt it. I suppose unless there was a piece of the rock still stuck in the condensor, it would be hard to tell what caused the damage, but there should be evidence of damage, and the dealer should have been able to show you the damage and explain why they thought it was from a rock. Those battles with dealers over what is and isn't covered under warranty are no fun. Some people here would like to know what the dealer did to get you arctic air perhaps the airflow problem was from the system overcooling, causing frost to build up, either on the evaporator coil in the heater box, or perhaps the cabin air filter. If the airflow stopped, and turning the AC off and then right back on brought the air flow back, then it's probably not a freezing condensation problem. Do you know what parts they say they replaced to fixed the airflow problem?
