Engine swap (just for further knowledge)

Post by SuperSpeedWagon »

Ok right now my vibe has been used and abused by my parents they said they would get me a new one due to all the miles they put on mine, but to tell you the truth i dont like the new front ends i like mine so I'd rather keep mine. (its my baby lol ) (No offence to the 05- and up vibe owners just my opinion) Well I have 90000 plus miles on it and when I get to Houston or when i come back from Houston I want to swap out my engine for a new 1zz or even up grade it to a 2zz. I have been told to put like a GA engine (V6) and do some mods to that before putting it in but I dont want to deal with that. Any way I want you guys info... I have a 1zz base vibe engine Auto tranney, but what i want to do is 2 things...1.Get a 1zz engine S/C it or turbo it (also having internals in it) and making it a standard tranney and also do an AWD system on it.2. Getting the 2zz engine doing the same thing but just with a turbo.so what do you think should I do without the AWD and just go all out FWD??? and which engine do you think would be best to what Im trying to accomplish??? (MORE POWER!!!!) My goal is to make this baby at least hit a 12 or 11 that would be awesome or should I go for a diffrent engine? Once again this is a future project not in the works just trying to get some info on what i should do from ppl that i trust, that know these cars you know??? Please Help me and give me your knowledge on this oh wise ones lol

Well, I don't know who would tell you to put a Grand Am engine in this thing but you really DON'T want that... You just can't go from one brand's powetrain to another, which is exactly what you'll be doing. It's hard enough going from say, a GM four to a six on a car that was designed to have either. To go from a Toyota four to a GM six would be next to impossible unless you had a crapload of cash laying around. Maybe years ago this could have been done, but not so much anymore. Why not get an '06 and put the snout off an '03 on there?

Check out Monkey wrench and get one of their 1zz race engines. Then go to your local tranny guy and have them build you a race shift kit and torque converter to handle 500hp like mine. Stay with the automatic, it's cheaper to build up your tranny then to swap to a standard. Then you can do what ever you want to it. 150 shot of nitrous will get you to the 12's. ORJust have your old engine sleeved & rebuilt with forged internals bored out to 2+ liters. Then boost the hell out of it.

That is a huge undertaking changing a Vibe base A/T to a 1zz or 2zz with FI, M/T and AWD? If you have a ton of money to throw into it then great. Otherwise I would start with a platform that is already there like the EVO or STI and spend a lot less money. But it would be a sweet project! Remember to take pics. haha. I would do what Lancer suggests. Build the engine, upgrade the tranny and the boost it.

Ok one more question cause im getting the answers i need.... Would it be better to keep the engine i have right now cause it has a crap load of miles on it and do all internals and etc... or get a some what new one say with about 30000 miles or less and then do it???? just a question..

With todays engines, 100k miles is like middle age. If it's been taken care of and not beat to hell on a daily basis you should be alright rebuilding your old engine. Then again:If you can find a good deal on a 'younger' one, that would be a good idea also. Then you could have it built up and the swap would be a lot faster.Damn, That's a hard decision? I think I personally would go with the newer engine so I could save up and get the parts and work done that I want. Less down time in the end. Plus, I would keep the older one for parts.

Forged: Shaped by strong pressure in a press, or by heating and hammering;- of metal objects. It's very strong metal parts that can withstand a lot of pressure. Forged sleeves and internals (pistons, rods, crank shaft) will make your engine strong enough to withstand high boost without breaking.

Changing to a 2zz would be a ton of work and money, same with AWD. And the awd has been shown to not hold up to FI well.I think the best way would be a engine from MWRhttp://monkeywrenchracing.com/....htmlyou buy a built up engine (any stage) and ship your old one back for a refund on the core charge. then either do what lancer did with having a local shop pump up your tranny or order a kit from http://www.levelten.com to make that tranny "bullet proof" and FI the crap out of that MWR 1zz engine!! that would be what i would do. Turbo is going to get you past 200whp easy 250 fairly easy too.

It should come back from MW over 250hp. Boost it til you got at least 400hp man! You'll also NEED an LSD with that tranny. And wider wheels and tires. That much hp on our light cars will just toast your tires.

If you're going for more boost than the factory SC kit, make sure that you upgrade the crank bearings.
