8" vs 10" sub

Post by shane_c »

I'm going to be picking up a sub in the next little while. I want something that will take up the least amount of room possible. I have an amp already so would be picking up a sub and a box. I'm thinking I could get away with a smaller box with the 8". I would be going with a sealed enclosure. What is the main difference in sound between the 8 and 10? I'm just looking to round out the sound and don't want a lot of loud booming. Are 8" subs generally tigher and more accurate with bass?

depends and the model and brand. 8's don't usually put out alot and you said you don't want alot of boom so an 8 would be perfect for you, and yea the smaller they are the tigher and faster they thump. If you really want something clean and small look at the new JL 6 inch subs. Good bumps and very clean sound. Great for hiding and not taking up your cargo area.

The 10" sub will generally extend to lower frequencies..You could get yourself a Bazooka 8", they aren't bad... but they aren't perfect either. How large is your power amp? You'll want something that can typically overpower the speaker (if your speaker handles 300W, great.. but your amp should be able to output much more power to eliminate the chance of distortion/clipping.. this will blow a speaker faster than overpowering).I'm going to fabricate a trick cabinet (sealed, typically, a vented enclosure needs to be larger for dynamic volume, however, you get more output at the tuned frequency, upwards of 3dB typical, 6dB usual... from memory). Mine shall be a dual 10", and should have 3/4 cu.ft. air spring behind the woofer (sealed). JL audio woofers are cheap and quite effective.. very efficient, and extend to low frequencies.yes, 8" subs should have a tighter bass note than a 10", generally. A good 10" sub may also have this quality.CheersListen to them both at a local retailer, and see what you think.. If you think an 8" will do it (for space), try it out. The Bazooka might be a good choice overall.. (comes with an integral amp)

I believe my amp is 200 or 300 watts. It's back at my parents home from when I lived there a few years ago so it's in the mail as we speak to my place. I'm going to go out on my lunch today and have a look around to see what's available.

So my trip at lunch was kind of pointless. Checked out 2 places and they're basically telling me that whatever sub I get I will need a custom box at a cost of about $250 in order for it to work properly. Screw that. There is another electronics place that often has deals of a 10" sub and box for $99. I think I'll just go with that. I've been finding that the price of an 8" is often more expensive than the 10" ones.

what brand are they? Careful goin cheap on audio, you might as well not put a system if you have to, you'll end up regretting it later.

8" Subs are not very often used, nor popular. Finding boxes, or the subs themselves, will be more expensive because they aren't usually carried.

Well my bro has a kick (removed) system, but as for 8'' and 10'' . The 8'' is good for those mids and the 10'' and 12'' are good for the lows. Make sure that the amp you are using is a mono block it thumps alot better then a multichannel. good luck on that oh yeah and it does depent on the brand and material that those companies use some are good and some are even better and some just plain suck haha peace

The store usually alternates between a 10" Rockford Fosgate and Infinity sub w/ box for around $99. I know there's probably better out there but I just want to add a little punch and not spend a ton.
