1.5 or 2 Din??? 6.5 or 6.75??? Speaker depth??? Metra dash kit 99-8205

Post by cohocarl »

While I'm waiting for my vibe to come in, I've been deciding on a new stereo & speaker system to put in it. From what I've read on this forum, http://www.matrixowners.com , and http://www.matrixvibe.net , it appears some believe the radio is 2 din, and some believe it is actually a 1.5 din. Has anyone purchased the Metra dash kit (99-8205) and installed two 1 din radios in their Vibe?????, or a 2 din radio???Also, it sounds like 6.5 speakers will fit in all 4 doors, but I was wondering about the depth. Has anyone installed new speakers and seen how much area we have for the depth of the speaker??? Also, do you think 6.75 inch speakers would be a problem???Thanks alot.Carl(awaiting Shadow 5-speed)

I can't give you an exact answer, but if you look at the GT-R version of the vehicle, you can see they fit two single-DIN units in the space of the stereo with space left over. So it is actually somewhat larger than a 2-DIN space.

7-29-2002. So far there is no dash kit for the Vibe and Matrix. I'm checking with Circut City periodically who orders kits from the top two makers. I'll let you know

I put 4 new 6 1/2 speaker in my vibe along with 2 12 inch MTX woofers in the back pushed by a 600-watt amp with 2 high performance bass caps. Not sure how much space was left in the doors. Had it professionally done at Circut City Roadshop so they wouldn't let me peek. I would stick with 6 1/2 so you wont run to any "grounding" problems. Get the Infinity speaker ($99 a pair)these are my second pair of speakers and they sound great. The only downside of course is that I'm still using that crappy 100-watt radio, because "we" are still waiting on the dash-kit. The bass from the Subs out performs the inside speakers.

Thanks for the replies. Regarding the dash kit, I ordered a Panasonic head unit, Metra dash kit, and wiring harness from Autotoys.com. The radio was shipped right away, but the dash kit and wiring harness took about another week because it was back-ordered. (was no big deal....I don't even have the car yet) It sounds like the dash kits are in short supply. I've got a pair of Crystal's and a pair of Cerwin Vegas (6 1/2's) to put in also. I'm not into the thumpin' subs, but I'm thinking of getting a 1/2-way decent amp for it also. Thanks again,Carl
