Massive job cuts for Ford

Post by joatmon »

http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/2...n=yesQuote »Ford to cut up to 30,000 jobsNo. 2 automaker to close 14 North American manufacturing plants in effort to stem losses.January 23, 2006: 11:56 AM ESTNEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Ford Motor Co. said Monday it plans to close 14 manufacturing plants in North America and cut between 25,000 to 30,000 jobs in the coming years as it tries to stem losses and adjust to its new, significantly lower market share. The nation's No. 2 automaker said that it will close a total of seven North American assembly plants, including three U.S. assembly plants identified for closing Monday -- in St. Louis, Wixom, Mich., and Atlanta. Two other assembly plants yet to be determined will also be closed by 2008, while the St. Thomas, Ontario assembly plant, with nearly 2,600 employees, will lose one of its two shifts. The other plants to be closed are powertrain and stamping plants, such as the Batavia, Ohio, transmission plant, with more than 1,700 employees, which was identified Monday....

I wonder how many Ford plants outside of the U.S and Canada will close?how many of the 30,000 people laid off will still be Ford owners....along with all the small businesses that rely on the factory workers for income.pretty sad.

The St. Paul Ford Ranger Plant has been spared for now. It was rumored to be on the chopping block. It is not out of the woods yet though, since Ford will be announcing two more plant closings later this year, it may still close. People around here are relieved for now. We'll see what the future holds.

Rumar has it that there is at 1 in Me hi co. I just wonder if Ford did it because GM was able to do something similar and meet little criticism from the press.

I won't admit to how long it took me to figure out what you meant, I kept thinking Maine Hawaii Colorado, and although I am not familiar with the location of Ford plants, it seemed really odd for them to have one in Hawaii.

I wonder why they won't give any more details about the other plants that will be affected?http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01...epageQuote »Ford said it would shut assembly plants in Wixom, Mich., outside Detroit; Hapeville, Ga., outside Atlanta; and in Hazelwood, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis. The automaker also is cutting one shift of workers at its assembly plant in St. Thomas, Ontario, about two hours west of Toronto. The automaker also said two more assembly plants would close, although it did not identify them. Ford is closing a transmission plant in Batavia, Ohio, near Cincinnati, and auto industry analysts said they expected other Ford parts plants would also shut as the company decides which assembly plants will close. At least GM had the nads to come out and say who was getting canned and when, during the initial announcement. Unless the closings are a "wait-and-see" sort of thing, to figure out who needs to stay and who needs to go, then Ford may have more nads than GM who just said screw you all! But I dunno...Down the road and across the river from me over in Louisville, KY, they have two Ford plants - Ranger and Exploder, and the heavy duty trucks (which also produced the thank god it is now defunt Excretion.) Wondering if either one of those are under consideration... hmm!...Waiting patiently for the news from Chrysler now...

I didn't read all of the article you linked, but some of the other articles I've read about this say that these layoffs and closures will not be completed until 2012 and that some of the lost employees will be retirees. In short, I would say that you're right. It's a wait and see thing. They don't want to just jump into it.

Link --> http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb...30423This article says Quote »... Ford is not disclosing the full list of plant closings because it is still determining which sites make the most sense to shut down. ...Meanwhile, Ford plans to build a low-cost assembly plant in North America in a location yet to be determined. The plant, said analysts, is an example of the sort of flexible and efficient auto manufacturing Ford would like to adopt in North America and may be used as bait for communities vying for investment."That's part of the carrot you put out with communities as you're closing a plant," said Alan Baum, industry analyst with the Planning Edge in Detroit.By holding back the identity of all 14 plants to be closed, Ford can maintain leverage to play communities off of one another until it receives generous incentive packages from cities eager to keep the auto giant - and its jobs - in their backyards.Cutting production capacity to meet (swiftly declining) demand sounds like a sure-fire way to extinction to me.Of course 'low cost' probably = non-union.When all of us baby-boomers (that want one) have a retro-Mustang in our garage, Ford cars will be out of business. Maybe they should just rename the company 'F-150'!

Quote, originally posted by joatmon »low cost could also mean...Too bad American companies have a mindset that the way to make money is to close plants and eliminate workers. I thought the main goal of a company was to make a product that people want to buy. When a company announces plant closings, elimination of employees, their stock price jumps up cuz their profits this quarter will be higher. To me, this is a sign that the company is failing. Doesn't it seem like if a company announces it is having to hire employees, it is growing, with a better potential to make profits???? Ah, what do I know....I don't remember any of that Psych. and Economics I double majored in anyways.......
