Gas Prices!

Post by msmyer »

I don’t know about you guys but gas is way to expensive…..Monday gas “jumped” from $1.55/gallon to $1.79/gallon (in Dayton, Ohio for unleaded)! Something tells me that wasn’t the worst jump! I’m glad I own a Vibe with that good gas mileage!

We're at about 85 cents a litre here in Northwestern Ontario, but I hear Quebec is quite high as well.

Gas jumped from $1.50 to $1.79 for regular unleaded yesterday. Mid grade went to $1.89 and premium to $1.99. Luckily on my side of town they had the Tuesday specials still going when all three grades of gas are the same as regular and their prices were still at $1.50 for all grades. So I filled up at $1.50 for premium in my GT.

As you may notice, Canadians are spending more for gas than Americans. Most industrialized countries in the world pay more for gas than we do here in the USA. Although it expensive to keep your Vibe flowing with 93 octane, I suggest we hold our compaining until it hits $3-4 a gallon (which may happen sooner than we fear). I say the Vibe's mpg are great. And if you drive an SUV, you might just deserve to go broke.

I am a conservative Republican, but am of the opinion that our national leaders have had their head in the sand for the last 30 years in regard to our nation's "thirst" for energy, and that is part of our present problem with the Arabs. If the world consumed like we do the oil would be gone. One of the legitamite purposes of taxation is to influence behavior, and I presume that is why the Canadians and the US heavily taxes tobacco and alcohol. About the only thing I agreed with Bill Clinton on was a 50 cent gas tax. (Today you probably woyuld need $1.) Temper that with a $200 tax credit to account for 12,000 miles @30 mpg and it wouldn't hurt the "poor". We ought to tax ordinary light bulbs $1 each and use that revenue to subsidize the cost of more energy efficient fluoro bulbs. When oil was cheap, we should have been importing all we could and left the Alaskan oil in the gound. Unfortunately it may be too late. Not for "us" perhaps, but for our children and grandchildren. In regard to nuclear power, many years ago I saw a picket sign that said "Nuclear power - safer than riding in Ted Kennedy's car."

Hydrogen cars are coming, dont anyone be fooled. By closer to the end of the 1st quarter century they will be coming in strong. Give it only 10 years and they will have started. Thats my prediction, the west will have to live without oil eventually. Its the saudis that are fooln with the prices of oil. If there is a war and a new democratic government is set up in iraq with control of their oil prices will then stabalize again because iraq is the second largest producer of oil in that region if i am not mistaken.I may feel the pinch with my gn on the gas since I can only go with sunoco 94, thats gonna suck, might even forget about brining it back in to town since its a 600km trek. Just my 2.5 cents

The price of gas really took a leap the past week from $1.49 to $1.57 (this is no name gas, regular, self-serve). Chevron fuel is pushing $1.68 per gallon. We Alaskans think that this is ironic since we have the pipeline running right next to Fairbanks and oil wells in Cook Inlet right in Anchorage and tap into it with our own local processing plants. The irony is that when the price of gas declines in the lower 48 states, it remains higher here for some months more. If we go to war and gas goes berserk, I'll have to put studs on my rear tire and a front ski on my Kawi Ninja to get to work!!

Usually here, the 1st bran to increase his price is Petro-Canada, who picks up is auto-sufficient and do not buy any petroleum from other country. So, if this oil is coming from prairies, why the potential war affect them. BTW, the profits of Petro-Can incresed of 300% in the last quarter.

Our oil companies have been supposedly investigated time after time for price fixing and found "not guilty". The identical prcing for blocks is just a coincidence I am sure. Also the skyrocketing profits that the oil companies are making are not a function of gouging.. just ask the impartial oil companies or the government which collects taxes on a percentage of sale price ( i.e. each price increase increases government taxes collected). If you want to take a run at combatting this travesty here are a couple of sites.. www.ontariogasprices.com and www.garnetknight.com/gas/ . I'm glad I've got a Vibe!

"One of the legitamite purposes of taxation is to influence behavior..." Boy Jake, you'll have to show me that authority in the Constitution. That statement is appalling! I don't disagree that taxes DO influence behavior. Virtually every financial decision a business makes must take taxes into consideration. But is it the governments constitutional responsibility to tell us what kind of cars to buy? That sounds like (communist) central planning to me! Hitler was behind the design of the "peoples car" - the Volkswagon. How much more evidence do we need of the failures of government (central) planning? How would you like to walk into a car dealer to pick up your new car and be told "Here you go Jake! Here's the car TED KENNEDY and HILLARY CLINTON picked out for you! Enjoy your Yugo!"

Today's USA Today had one of their small bottom corner graphs about world gas prices. Over $5 per gallon in Hong Kong, over $4 in London and Paris and few other world cities. We need to recognize that just because we are Americans, it does not entitle us cheap gas.

Not to argue either, but are we a strong economy? or are we just spoiled with low gas prices? To me it seems that we are overly dependent on gas and should not be taking low gas prices for granted, especially with an oil war on the horizon. But, of course, Bush has promised us hydrogen powered cars in few years, so we shouldn't worry too much. And please don't mind me - I'm just an SUV hater and tree hugger at heart.

Wow silver, you almost got off on a bit of a rant there. I do not want to cause any trouble here and am not "strong" in my beliefs (no membership card to the ELF in my wallet!). Yes, I have a garden. Yes, I eat organic food (although I enjoy Wendy's burgers). Yes, I put gas in my Vibe - although I bought the Vibe partly because I like to drive a car that has "reasonable" gas milage.I also have a college education, a BS in Economics, if you can believe that (I do not use my degree at all in my work and have dutifully forgotten everything I've learned). Although we seem to be arguing here, I think we may see things very much a like. There are reasons you do not drill on your property, and there should be reasons why we, as a society, do not care more about being environmentally friendly, but we will never care about this as long as gas is cheap. Sadly, there is a lot of ignorance out there - some people plainly do not care about a lot besides how much they are paying for a gallon gas. Granted my argument on this point is rather weak since no one wants to spend more money for gas. But when it comes right down to it, we should care more about how much is our car or SUV hurting the environment rather than how much we are paying for gas. We should care more about mpg than we do about price per fill up. We go to war over oil and never get mad enough to “seriously” look into alternative source of energy. We fix problems too slowly (often we like to ignore them)...and we create new ones for our grandchildren. I believe you are seeing the tank as half filled where I think it is becoming empty.Oh well, life is better when there is less mess....And we can leave it at that.

OK, I've been silent on this one long enough. I'm not going to argue with anyone here, but there are a few facts that need to be set straight.---As for why we seem to ignore some problems and so on... follow the money trail. We have a lot of our economy invested in oil and oil interests. If all that invested capital just disappeared one day we'd all be so screwed that we probably would never recover. This problem is twofold. How do we reduce our oil dependence while gradually reinvesting the vast amounts of money tied up in oil interests? Not an easy task.---Next, a few facts. The US is the world's largest player in the oil market. We even invented it and were the first to industrialize oil production and refinement. The price of crude oil for the world market is set in London by a group called BRENT. Not by the US or even the free market. The price is set in US dollars (again, since we were the first) and the official unit of measure is barrels. The US is cut a much better deal by the price setters because we use so much and because we have the most invested in it. We are the ones who pretty much developed the world market and it is vastly dependent on us. If one day the US just quit buying oil (assuming we had already developed technologies to replace it), what would happen to so many other countries, particularly the OPEC nations? Their entire economies would be destroyed overnight. Remember, many foreign nations are dependent on the oil industry for most of their GDP. Take that income away and you will just have impovrished a significant portion of the world's population. And you think other countries hate us now? Take away all their money and income (permanently) and see how much they like us.---The rising price of oil today is caused by a few major factors. Oil production in Venezuela is very slow in resuming. They supply us with about 17% of our total incoming oil. Not having that 17% is straining the rest of the market and driving up prices domestically. Notions of war in the Persian Gulf region always upset the oil market. This is because of the instability that the potential of war in the region brings. Regime changes in big oil producing countries equate to the total reworking of oil supply contracts because a new government is not obligated to honor the old contracts. I predict that oil prices will continue to gradually climb until war breaks out. They will then most likely hold about steady until the war ends, and then they will fall sharply back in line. If the US wins the war, ousts Saddam, and has to temporarily control Iraq until a new government is formed and instituted, the price of oil for the US will probably drop to very low levels. I really think we could possibly see a gradual decline in oil prices until they went as low as they did around the winter/spring of 1997 or 1998, I can't remember which year it was(I was paying around 87 to 89 cents per gallon that winter for regular gas), possibly even lower if things are not carefully controlled. Do you remember why gas prices went so low that year all of a sudden? It was because Saddam Hussein increased oil production for a while which flooded the market and drastically reduced the price. After the 1991 Gulf War, oil embargos and sanctions were placed on Iraq that limited the amount of oil they were allowed to export. This was to prevent Iraq from making a bunch of money from oil sales quickly and rebuilding their arsonal of weapons to cause problems in the region again. Saddam ignored these sanctions and was able to sneak a lot of oil onto the world market (probably with help from other sympathetic arab nations). He was asking the UN to lift the sanctions because they were allegedly hurting the Iraqi people. However, he was refusing to comply with the regulations set forth by the UN that would lift the embargos (sounding familiar?). Enter round one of the weapons inspectors around 1998-1999. He limited what the inspectors could do and see in Iraq, then finally threw them out of Iraq all together. This was when Clinton "Wagged the Dog" and ordered a few patriot missile attacks on the eve of the beginning of the impeachment hearings. All of a sudden, after 6-7 years of ignoring Iraq and the growing threat they were becoming again, did we do something about it. Too bad it had to be a half-hearted attempt that was more designed to distract America from what was happening at home and effectively accomplished nothing. That whole situation turned into a stalemate where the UN refused to lift the sanctions and Iraq refused to allow the inspectors in. Fast forward to November 8, 2002. Recognizing the threat that Saddam has built himself up to be now, the UN Security Coucil unanimously passes Resolution #1441 requiring Iraq to disclose all information regarding its weapons programs and destroy all of its weapons of mass destruction and capabilities to make these weapons. Everyone in the world knew that Saddam Hussein would not do this, so the resolution included the threat of very dire consequences for failure to comply with the resolution. What we have today is a large scale failure to comply that most every nation has to admit to. Their proposed solutions to the problem are now varying depending on their own political and economic interests while the safety and stability in the Middle East is threatened.---Here is what I think will happen next. March 1st, the deadline date the US, Great Britain, and Spain have set for Iraq to destroy its' Al Samoud II missiles that violate UN mandates imposed on the maximum range of Iraq's missiles after the Gulf War. Saddam has already hinted that he will not comply with this demand, and I predict that he will not. This will be the last breaking point that the US and its' allies will allow to be reached. On March 7th or 8th (I forget now which day), Hans Blix is scheduled to present his next report on the progress of the weapons inspections. It will be pretty much the same as the last 3 times, Iraq is still not in full compliance, but is slowly making a bit of progress. This will be the last of this that is tolerated and within one day, the UN Security Council will be voting to decide on what steps to take next. France, Russia, Germany, and China will oppose war and propose a plan to perpetuate the mock weapons inspections that are going on in Iraq. The US, Great Britain, Spain, and Bulgaria will not accept the counter-offer and the deadlock will resume. Coalition forces will then warn the UN to remove its' people from the area at once. March 15th--war begins--"Beware the Ides of March". The symbolism and timing are too great to pass up, that is my predicted date of the outbreak of war. I'm no clairvoyant, just my educated guesses here. Now, why all the opposition to US proposals by certain countries when it is very clear that Iraq is a threat to its' neighbors and intends to remain that way? Let's look briefly at each opposing country.France--Has the largest vested interest in keeping Saddam Hussein in power because it has literally trillions of dollars in contracts and oil investments (more than any other country) that would not likely be honored by a new government in Iraq. Some of these contracts are suspected to be illegal because they violate UN sanctions put on Iraqi oil sales after the 1991 Gulf War. Did that deter the French from making the deals? Apparantly not. They have sold out peace in the region for a bunch of poorly (and possibly illegally) invested oil interests.Germany--Gerhard Schroeder is causing us problems for 2 reasons: he has many anti-american sentiments that won him the recent German election and because Germany allegedly has a back door entrace to some of the contracts France has with Iraq. Germany is poised to piggy-back on the benefits of France's investments in Iraq. Perhaps Germany lent money to France for the investments and a back door on the contracts is what they get in return?China--constantly enjoys messing with the US through indirect means for decades now. Also is the nation that i
mports the most oil by volume every day (the US imports the most "per capita", but you never hear about China). China is gently trying to work its way to being #1 in the world. They have the most people, a huge amount of land, vast economy, enormous military, pretty advanced technology (thanks in part to Clinton and Gore), and many resources. They are quietly fixed on becoming the dominant nation in the world. Any opposition to further American advancement they can pose, they will. Remember, totalitarian regiemes and communist governments make themselves enemies of the American way. China has the double-whammy.Russia--they are struggling to maintain stability in their own economy and help it to grow. They control the largest untapped quantities of oil in the world. Any influence they have over Middle Eastern oil producing nations is of even greater benefit to them. They tried to take over the majority of the world's oil market in the '80's when they aided Iran to try and overthrow Iraq and take it over. They wanted to build a pipeline from the Middle East deep into Russia so they would have sole control over the majority of the world's oil supply. It was the last ditch effort to save communinsm and win the Cold War. Thankfully, Reagan was able to stop them from succeeding. Unfortunately, in order to stop them, we had to supply Iraq to help them fight off the Russian-supported Iranians. Russia still has deeply vested interests in the Middle Eastern region, and likely sees them as vital to the continued recovery and growth of the Russian economy. There is a chance that Russia may be on the fence this time, however. It has been recently rumored that the US is negotiating with Russia to allow them to treat the Chechnyan rebels as war criminals/terrorists in exchange for their support in the Iraq situation.Very sorry for all this being so long and complicated, just wanted to share what I knew so that others might be just as well informed, as this situation will be affecting us all in some way. Also, please do not misunderstand me. I do not want war any more than most other people do. However, I realize that sometimes war is necessary to bring about peace. I strongly feel that this is one of those times. God Bless America and those with the courage to stand up beside her in these trying hours.

You can find cheap gas by going to http://autos.msn.com/everyday/everyday. ... pos=My1and a little ways down on the right side, you put in your zip code, and it gives you the cheapest gas in your area. Apparantly, Georgia has the lowest rates in the nation for hte most part, San Fran the highest, at over $2/gal!!! http://www.gaspricewatch.com/ gives you similar info.I definitely find myself not driving nearly as much as I used to...and as much as I love my horsepower, I am concerned about the future of our environment, and quite frankly, money is scarce, so for my next car I'm definitely gonna take a hard look at a hybrid, or, maybe they'll have alternative fuel vehicles by then...that would be great.I'm confident that eventually, hydrogen fuel vehicles will be able to get as much horsepower as modern-day vehicles, and the only by-product will be water! That will be schweet....But, coming abck down to eart...I find myself driving less and easing off the gas to try and stretch my dollars out...plus, here's a nifty little tip from our local NBC affiliate:"Proctor says consumers can also save money by filling up their cars on certain days of the week. He says gas prices sometimes rise on Thursdays in advance of weekends, when travelers and other consumers tend to boost demand. Proctor says gas prices typically "start coming down (on) Sunday (and on) Monday morning ... to about the lowest price of the week, which would be about Tuesday midday or Wednesday morning."Hope that helps y'all.

This year?? Whoever told you this needs a brain enema. And for the record, most of our oil does come from the Middle East. As I stated in my novel above, we get around 17-18% of our total imported oil from Venezuela. And yes, largely due to the government instability there, oil production is slow to resume after the labor strike. If they get back on track, gas prices would hopefully fall about 20-25 cents per gallon. As for my other thoughts on what might make gas prices fall in the near future, please scan through my lengthy post above, it's all in there.

That will be schweet....Developing this technology would be great! I'm all for it and have been for a few years now. The big problem with hydrogen is its' extreme volitility. Remember the Hindenberg accident? It exploded because it was filled with hydrogen. Imagine the consequences of a significant amount of hydrogen being ignited in a car crash. It would be chaos. The other problem is that it is currently a rather expensive process to produce pure hydrogen. If we could find a way to stabilize its' volitility and produce and distribute it cheaply and safely, it would be an excellent alternative fuel and would quickly replace oil.The benefits are enormous. Hydrogen is one of the most plentiful elements on earth. It also contains a LOT of energy in relatively small quantites. I would guesstimate that the energy stored in 25 gallons of gasoline would about equal the energy stored in 3-4 gallons of hydrogen (if you could measure it that way for comparison). Would save space and weight. At that exhange rate, if we could fill up our tanks in our Vibes with hydrogen, we should only have to fill up about every 6 weeks or so, assuming you fill up with gas once per week now. That's amazing!

Well, hydrogen fuel cells ARE still in the development stage... ...but yeah, the volatility is an interesting thought, I completely forgot about the rise and rapid fall of the zepplin and airship era...good point. It is sad there isn't more of a rush to develop alternative fuel cells. What a kicker that would be if one day, we could turn to OPEC and say, "oh, you wanna jack up prices 500%? Sure, go for it! We don't need no stinkin' oil!!!" And believe me, when I reliable (and hopefully powerful) alternative fuel vehicle is there, adn the fuel is readily available, I'm there baby!

We could get along fine without Iraq's oil. We've done so for about 12 years now since the Iraqi oil embargo was enacted in 1991 after the Gulf War. I am confident now, with the recent added government initiative, that practical alternative fuel vehicles are probably less than a decade away now. This will be interesting.Iraq is only about the oil??? Show me one nation's government in the world that takes the official stance that Iraq is not a threat to its' neighbors (particularly Israel, our strong and faithful ally) and I will show you a nation's government that is lying through their teeth. Saddam will stop at nothing to try and achieve his evil goals. Look at the recent situation regarding these fools who are voluntarily going over there to act as "human shields". Iraq is supporting and aiding these people, providing them with transportation, food, housing, etc. The use of "human sheilds" is in direct violation of the rules of every international peacekeeping body, especially the UN. This is considered a war crime, and Saddam is committing it right now.quote:Believe me 120 Million Barrels a day will solve alot of economic issues for the winning team here...Yes, I agree here, but if the other countries were thinking of this like we are, why are they not onboard with us to get a share in it? Because of alterior motives. They are selfishly hanging on to the hopes that they will protect Saddam, keep him in power, and get the embargos lifted so they can make out on the contracts they have.quote:And you have North Korea..that came out of nowhere early in the year to interfere(buy firing up reactors as a statement) with this because, they illegally deal with IRAQ..........Fuel for nuke technology, so to them loosing Sadam is loosing food on there tableNorth Korea did what they did for two reasons. One, to try to blackmail the US into giving them aid to stop the nuke progams and two, to try and create a diversion away from Iraq because they have a deep interest in keeping Saddam in power for reasons you have mentioned. I have two responses to this: first, we will NOT be blackmailed, and have already publicly stated this and second, we are more than capable of taking care of Iraq and N. Korea at the same time. These 2 nations are stepping into the big dance now and they are going to get it shoved back down their throats in the end.quote:Turkey, "so called muslims", agree to allow US to use there bases because they are getting paid very well by the Bush administration, and this oppurtunity will alow them to take over the kurds and possibly some of iraq!Turkey is now no longer a muslim nation because they are providing strategic aid to us? Rewriting long standing history there, aren't we? Turkey is not being "paid" to allow us over there. We already have permanent bases there and have now for years (they are OUR bases, not theirs). The issue you have mistaken about the use of bases is not true. We already have a lot of military equipment and troops stationed in Turkey. The issue that you are thinking of is that we were asking Turkey for permission to cross their borders to launch a ground offensive into Iraq from inside Turkey. They were hesitant only because they feared retaliation from Iraqi missle attacks on their country. That is why they appealed to NATO for assisting them with defending their country. Turkey is a NATO member nation and is obligated under the NATO rules to provide us with assistance to fight a common enemy. The money promised to Turkey is to strictly to reimburse them for the costs they incurred on our behalf during and after the Gulf War. The majority of the "money" you are referring to is actually loan guarantees, not a big check to pay off Turkey. It is a guarantee to them that should they incur further expenses on our behalf as a result of the current potential war, they will be able to get the funds to operate their country and keep it from going bankrupt. They are already strained by the debts we owe them. We are just now paying up. They also despirately want to be a part of Europe, which would bring their country out of the dark ages and into modernity. There will be NO dealing for Turkey to gain kurdish territory. We have been protecting the kurds from Saddam for over 10 years now (hence the northern no-fly zone in Iraq--the southern no-fly zone is to protect Kuwait from Iraqi attack), we are certainly not about to just hand them over for slaughter to the Turks now. That assertion is almost laughable. Bush's top administrators have been in nothern Iraq (kurdish territory) for a few days now to guarantee them that what you are saying is not our position or intention. We need kurdish cooperation for a successful toppeling of Saddam and the institution of a democratic government there. We would be shooting ourselves in the foot with a bazooka if we were to turn our backs on and sell out the kurds. Be careful who you accuse of asserting half-truths. You are the one who has not thought out the whole story. Don't buy into the propaganda promoted by the media. Think a little for yourself and use history as your guide.quote:and which makes everyone pay dearly in one way or another.....whether high heating bills or High Gas, we are scheduled to get shafted big time here!I don't understand this idea either. If we gain control over Iraq's resources by ousting Saddam and temporarily taking over the country, it would only be to our benefit, certainly not screwing us. Putting Iraqi oil back on the market (and allowing the proceeds to go to Iraq's economy) would only benefit us AND Iraq. I don't know why Bush's critics keep repeating the mantra that we are only in it for the oil and we will rob the Iraqi's blind if we take over. Iraq is a rather moderized nation. It would serve us no benefit to turn it into a permanent welfare state dependent on the US. We would get a bunch of oil out of it, but the costs we would have to assume would far outweigh any potential benefits. This idea that we are just out to steal Iraq's oil is nothing more than a myth. The myth was started and is fueled by Saddam himself, and we all know that this guy just doesn't have it all together upstairs.

i usually get gasoline at the same station, consistently the best price around for me. I get 87 octane, $US , US gallonsIn January 2003, I paid $1.339 /gallon. Hit $1.599 in March, dropped back to 1.339 byJune 1.599 in september, back to 1.359 in November, today it was back up to $1.559.I heard on the radio that prices could be expected to jump an additional 60 ¢ /gallon in the next month or so.
