Hand held GPS

Post by ToolGuy »

Anyone have one here?I am seriously looking at a Garmin V unit. I have used a Garmin V and really like it... Anyone with a GV and wants to sell it let me know too. GPS in general is sweet, I just discovered it! I do not need a color display while it is better, it cost more and for what I need, B&W would be fine, turn by turn directions is a must.

James has one of the Garmin Gekos, but it's been through the spin cycle so sometimes it can't be trusted anymore. But it's pretty cool to at least pretend you went 400 mph or something like that in your Vibe! As far as timing trips and how long it should take to get somewhere though, it does a pretty good job. And it's also great for when you're not the one driving so you can check and see how fast they're going...haha.Mike's GPS and laptop combo setup was pretty cool in MI...it would talk and give directions while you were driving. I'd love to eventually have something like that in a vehicle, but I'm thinking it'll be a while before I do...

Have you considered the Pioneer AVICD1 or AVICN2? They come with XM NavTraffic which claims to route the driver to their destination avoiding traffic congestion.I'd like to know it XM NavTraffic really works and if so, how much it costs.

That sounds really slick but no I have not considered it. It is an entire stereo though from what you describe, right? As for GPS in general, I need it. I am so bad with directions and get lost in my backyard! So a GPS with "Turn By Turn" like the GV has is what I need... My boss loaned me his GV to play with but he also has it in his Jeep. The Jeep is color and this nice lady talks to you! It also yells and beeps at you when you are off the route!

I bought my dad a Garmin, but i cant remember the model. Its yellow and has rubber grips onthe side, I couldnt find it on garmins site. But i've used it driving before and we use it when we go four-wheeling at the cabin. VERY helpful and its only $150-200 maybe. it can be hooked up to a pc to install other maps and its water proof/resistant (cant remember either)

Look on ebay for the Garmin eMap. I have been using mine for about 3 years now with no problems. You can pick one up for about a hundred bucks now, as opposed to the three hundred they used to cost.

Wow, I just checked it out... I really like what I see there. I would love to have a GPS unit that um, works and stuff now. My old Geko 101 is, for all intents and purposes, a dead soldier. I really miss having a GPS around to keep track of my travels. Even the barebones basic thing that the one I had was, it was very useful. I can't imagine how nice somehting like this one would be to have around. If you can afford one, get it. It'll be a while until I can replace mine, so I'm stuck with nothing, waaaah!

Just bought a mount for the dashboard of my Vue to hold my Garmin Etrex Legend. I saw Rasermon's dash mount and I had to pick one up. Going on a trip to the other side of the state tomorrow, staying the night and taking a charter fishing trip Sunday A.M. Dying to see what the "tracks" of our trolling will look like out in Lake Michigan.

I installed a dash mount for my Garmin eTrex Vista® C this week. I was getting tired of having it on the dash and not being able to view it. I also bought a external power adapter (iGo) for it from the RatShack. You can't go wrong with any of the Garmin GPS's. eTrex Vista® C http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVistac/Garmin GPS unique install. http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=12500

That looks really good! Where did you get the mount for that thing?I like that, that works much better than the windshield mount I had for my gecko. Hmm, maybe I should put some pennies away for some sort of a basic etrex...... But... How much was the one you have? Goes with the car nicely, may be worth the extra cost to not have a bright yeller one on the dash. [EDIT/UPDATE:] Never mind, I looked it up. I believe, and I think someone has already recommended this one to me thus far, but if I had the $$$, this one is looking interesting too... A bit cheaper than the vista, not sure the differences, haven't looked that deep thus far. http://www.dickssportinggoods....39186Matches mah neptune! That's a good deal considering the accessories with it. Too bad that DB-9 serial cable thingy won't connect to my mac.

Check your local office depot. They have the Garmin Etrex Legend on sale for $116. Must be getting ready for the new models coming out this fall.

As was said, mine is hardly handheld, it's laptop software-based GPS navigation, but it really is phenomenal software.

The only complaint I have about my Legend is it only has 8mb of internal memory for storage of additional maps in the unit. Other than that, I find the thing amazing. For all the items in the bundle in your link, that's a steal. Wish I would have waited for that bundle. I paid I think $150 for just my unit, $25 for the car mount, (I haven't bought the 12V power cord yet, but they are $30, case is $15, the Topo maps are around $90-100), so the packaged bundle for $199 after rebate is a very good price. (I'd have $320 into it if I purchased all seperately)

We've got a Magellan GPS unit. Its really cool and batteries seem to last forever in it (probably because its not a colour display). We used it on our trip to New Hampshire in the White Mountains so we could see the elevation changing as we drove.

It took me 6 months to finally decide to buy the Palm Zire72 with the bluetooth gps and Tom Tom software. The way I came to this decision was I bought one GPS unit and tested it out for 20 days, returned it, got another one, I've tested garmin, navman, tom tom, navman pocket pc, all the way up to a $1500 magellan roadmate. The easiest and most accurate was the 2 tom tom units I tested, well I actually didn;t test the the one I currently have I bought it based on the tom tom unit I tested since the software was basically the same. I would HIGHLY reccommend the tom tom go 700 since it does realtime traffic, plus if you have a bluetooth phone it connects to your phone for easy hands free use with called ID displayed on the tom tom unit. it also works entirely from the screen, no buttons or control sticks it's touch screen only which makes it 300000x easier. So easy i bought one for my mom the only thing I had to tell her was to tap the screen to get the main menu. if the 700(about$900) is too pricey for you then there's a 300(about$700), but it doesn;t have the bluetooth or the realtime traffic. If you already have a bluetooth enabled palm then the kit is only $200, I believe on palmone.com they sell a package for $400, but no realtiem traffic. All have voice guided directions and you can walk around with them if you're in an unfamiliar city site seeing.
