2003 - turn off passenger airbag

Post by pmh013 »

So, there's a dog food commercial on TV tonight. The one lady says that her dog is so special, he always gets the front seat. I commented to my husband that if her car has an airbag, she shouldn't put her dog in the front seat, since it could be injured. His reply was, "Turn off the airbag."Well, I'm pretty sure you can't turn off the airbag in my 2003 Vibe. I did a search, but nothing definitive came up. So, GenVibers, help me win this one - can you (easily) turn off the passenger airbag in a 2003 Vibe?

To my knowledge, there is no way to turn off the passenger airbag on the Vibe. GM did have kits for a while on most of their cars, but discotinued them due to lake of demand. Toyota, never offered them, to my knowledge.

You could follow the SIR disable instructions and then simply unplug it, but it would trigger the SIR malfunction light.

The reason your Tundra had the disable switch for the passenger's air bag is simply because it was a truck... Generally, if you're dealing with a vehicle without much room, you'll get the disable switch (2-seaters, trucks) in the event that you have no choice but to put a child seat in the front. If you've got a standard passenger car with a back seat you won't get a switch. It may have something to disable the air bag automatically if little or no weight is present in the front passenger seat, but no way to manually control it...

The 2005's have smarter passenger airbag stuff, and it might be possible, but in the 2003 it would be neither easy or advisable.Did they commercial indicate what kind of car this eccentric dog owner had?
