2005 Programmable door locks, adding this to an 03-04

Post by ToolGuy »

Found out that 2005's Vibes, available on Base and standard on AWD, 4-speed auto trans only, have the option for programmable door locks. My question for all you elec guys is can we add it to an 03-04? Would we need to get an 2005 BCM?I have a Tech2 and would be more then happy to try looking for it or trying to unlock this feature on my 03 if I knew where to look.My wife would really like this feature so that is why I am asking...

I believe it can go a few different ways. They can lock when you are in Drive or unlock in Park, that is why the auto trans has that option only. On most cars it is this way. The other feature may be either to turn the option on or off or things like unlock all the doors at once or just the drivers side and the rest require pressing the button again. Similar to what we have to do now. My 6-speed has this option/programming even though it is a maunal trans. It locks at a certain speed and unlocks when the ignition is turned off.

So far I believe the only solutions discussed are to add some switches that would (somehow) trigger when the shifter is in park and goes past neutral. Probably magnetic switches of some sort..Or buy an aftermarket alarm/keyless entry system that locks on ignition. And the auto locks with the transmission, I believe, is mostly in american cars, very rarely is it in imports (the Vibe is a Toyota at heart, don't forget)

Our auto Camry has auto locks.I would suspect you'd need at least a new MFAM.

There has to be a way... I will search the 05 diag serv manuals, ask my electronics guys here and research controllers... Unless it is in the PCM or equivalent since it see's the trans gear selections and locks the doors. Forgive me if I do not know the proper controller names for a Vibe, I am more familiar with DCX and GM types. Someone got the soft stop disabled on the sunroof, this can be figured out too, I hope!

Come on!! If we (and when I say 'we', here, I mean 'you guys') put our collective heads together, we Gen Vibers can do anything!!!

I'll take a look through the service manuals tonight. Probably ought to be able to pick up something from the shifter and hit the lock/unlock lines. What kind of functionality are you looking for? Unlock in Park, lock in Drive? (Doing anything speed related would get really complicated)

I've been wanting to do the same for a while now. But of course, the project hasn't gone anywhere.

Okay, I was thinking using 05 parts to upgrade yours when I mentioned the MFAM.However, if you wanna hack mod it here's the deal:If you want to have it lock when you take it out of park, and/or unlock when you put it in park, I think it should be fairly easily doable. The transmission position switch has outputs for all the positions; The output for the current position (P,R,N,D,2,L) is connected to the ignition voltage when the shifter is in that position. The signal for PARK goes to the fuse block on the left side of the instrument panel, where it goes into the MFAM. You could tap it there.I think this would be the ideal location since the driver door lock switch also connects into the MFAM here. It has two signal lines, lock and unlock, which are respectively connected to ground when the switch is pushed into that position.I didn't have time this evening to scan the schematics or come up with a circuit, though. Essentially what you need is something to momentarily connect the lock signal to ground when PARK is disconnected from 12v, and momentarily connect the unlock to ground when PARK is connected to 12v. I think this can mostly be accomplished with a few relays, but as I said I haven't gotten that far.I'll try to get the schematics posted Wed PM, and maybe the brains of Genvibe can come up with something.

Hey thanks for looking into it!!!! So I saw you have an 05, funny how I did not notice before. How does the programmable feature work? And what can you do with it? Can you explain it for me please.I suppose I really am interested in the Park = Unlock and Drive = Lock...I agree with you on the MFAM and was really thinking that was the way to go. HOWEVER your above idea sounds like a possibility too if easy enough. The only bad thing is if I invest in an 05 MFAM and it does not work... I suppose I could sell it.I own my Vibe and if the easiest is to buy an 05 MFAM it is worth it. Amortized over the next few years and again, it is worth it. Even if it is $175, I can get it used or at a discount regardless.I did not have a chance last night to look at my parts CD to see if the part numbs on the MFAM are the same for 03-05. I suspect they are not...

It is only available with the auto tranny, and i have a manual. However, you can check out page 2-9 of the 05 owners manual which goes over the programmable door lock modes. I told GMJAP about this but I will post it too...After doing research last night I found the part number on the MFAM listed the years 03-05 and being the same number. So I think the MFAM is not the item someone would need to do this. Not sure where it would reside and I looked for part descriptions for clues and came up with nothing. This system is just not that complicated, I am baffled where it would reside! On another car of mine this functionality is in the BCM. I showed my wife the options to program taken from the 05 owners manual and she did not like any of the lock options. She wants to control the locks and nothing automatically done. Her biggest issue is when she grabs the door handle it does not manually unlock the door while it is pulled! From my experience, this is mostly a Foreign car thing...At any rate I will not be pursuing this mod, my wife said not to . However, if anyone needs my help, serv manual pages, P/N's or have me look for something using my Tech2, by all means ask me!

i think the easiest way to do this, would be to receive the input from the parking brake. park on, doors unluck, park off, doors lock. the parking brake is already wired and easy to reach. just gotta find the right voltage needed toset off the door locks. i've just moved to ny from va. don't really feel at home and defenately don't feel like doing this. but defenately a good mod. brings more class to our cars.
