The Silverado Hybrid is powered by a standard Vortec 5300 5.3-liter V8 engine and a 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission coupled with the full-size truck segment’s first hybrid propulsion technology for improved fuel economy. The system replaces the traditional starter motor and alternator with a compact 14-kw electric induction motor or starter generator integrated between the engine and transmission. The starter generator provides fast, quiet starting power and allows the gasoline engine to automatically start and stop under certain conditions to conserve fuel. The Silverado Hybrid also offers four 120-volt/20-amp electrical auxiliary power outlets located under the rear seat and in the pickup bed. The Silverado Hybrid is offered for 2005 with limited regional availability.http://autos.msn.com/research/...ftNav
The GM trucks ARE NOT A HYRBRID. GM irritates me to no end with this dern thing. It is *not* a hybrid. All it is is a system to stop and restart the truck at a stop light. In order to be a hybrid, it has to use a second source (electric or otherwise) to propel itself. The electric motor does not propel the vehicle. It is not eligable for the federal tax credits for hyrbrids either.Rant over. I just hate false advertising.
GM does already have Hydrogen powered Silverados, the military has them now and loves them. They are quiet and generate a lot less heat, great for military use. The military is also considering how to harvest the water generated from the exhaust in order to purify it for troop drinking water.

While this is an interesting system, and can give you a couple extra MPG's, it still isn't a hybrid. If anything, those trucks have more in common with a golf cart, than they do a Prius. I suppose they just wanted to cash in on the latest buzz word... It is kinda misleading.I don't even know if I can consider Honda's offerings "hybrids" either.. I may be wrong, but IIRC the electric motors only provide assist, supplemeting the gasoline engine. Now the Prius, that's a hybrid. One can run one of those at slow speeds completely on electricity for a short period of time, with the gas engine off. I don't think the Honda can do that (not sure about the other "hybrids" out there.)
