%Toyota and %Pontiac

Post by Brator »

What % of the car is really pontiac and what % is from toyota.I think most of the car is Toyota. The only thing that makes it a pontiac is the name, red dash lights, and the front end.

...actually, the engine is designed and cast by Yamaha. You could also wonder then about the mid-90's Ford Taurus SHO. It too had a Yamaha powerplant. The bottom line is where do the profits go for each vehicle? Vibe profits go to Pontiac. Matrix profits go to Toyota.

Read this in a Car and Driver article about the shared body parts...quote:Except for the outside mirrors and roof panel, which are shared, the Vibe and Matrix wear different skins. GM designers tried to give the Vibe a characteristic Pontiac look without the characteristic yards of plastic tack-on.Referenced from: http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddr ... uevibe.xml

The A/C systems are also different. Delphi makes the Vibe and I believe it is Denso that makes the Matrix.

I read that Vibes and 2003 Corollas are made in Fremont California at the NUMMI plant while the Matrix is made in a Toyota plant in Ontario Canada. A Toyota car dealer told me that the ABS brake system in the Matrix is a 4 channel Bosch design, while the Vibe uses a GM 2 channel ABS system.

Pontiac's paint seems to have improved greatly since the "turbo bell" GM paint fiasco of the late 80s-early 90s. My '93 Grand Prix had horrible paint that bubbled, cracked and simply splintered off of its own volition. My '98 Trans Am, on the other hand, has much better paint that still looks close to showroom quality today (of course, regular polishing helps!). As for paint chips, I've not had any on my Vibe yet.BTW, you had one of those KITT-style Firebirds? I'm looking for one of those...trying to find an '87-'90 GTA. Yeah...I'm a glutton for punishment!

NUMMI (A joint venture between Toyota & GM) in California builds the Pontiac Vibe and The Toyota Voltz (Japan version of Vibe), the also build the Toyota Corolla (sister to Vibe/Voltz/Matrix). The Toyota Matrix is built in Canada. I would not think it would share a line with a Lexus as they do not have a common platform (Still serarching for info). The Vibe uses a "Lucas/Sumitomo" 4 Channel ABS System. Sumitomo Electric Industries has a joint venture that includes Denso and Toyota as partners in brake system development. Bosch builds ABS systems for GM also. All GM Front Wheel/All Wheel Drive passenger cars are 4 channel. Toyota builds 50% more Matix then NUMMI builds Vibe. As far as A/C goes, still looking, all I could find was that Delphi won a Toyota Supplier Quality Award and GM uses Denso Compressors.

According to the Toyota web site, the Cambridge, Ontario complex now builds the Corolla, Matrix and Camary Solara Coupes. In the Fall of 2003 it will become the forst North American plant to build a Lexus when RX300 production starts. So 12+ months before that Lexus quality starts to rub off.

Well-I can't see the compressor name but I noticed the Delphi name on the freon lines in my Vibe. Also noticed that various parts in the engine compartment either have the Delphi or Denso name on them and most also say Toyota so I guess no matter if it's Delphi or Denso it's still a Toyota part as they sure aren't Delco.

actually just the head on the 2ZZ (VVTL-i) is done by yamaha, but designed by both yamaha has done work for Toyota before, and i think Toyota has a big share in the company now.one of their other popular projects was the V6 in the old Taurus SHO, that was a cool motor, surprising to find a V6 that loved to rev. there's that rumor that Ford had it running at 8500rpm for testing

quote:Glad to hear that it will produced north of the border instead of south of the border as many auto manufacturers are doing these days to take advantage of the cheap unskilled/uneducated labor that is in abundant supply. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, if they went south of the border they could also pollute our environment as much as they want. Nice to hear that Toyota is still concerned with the quality of the product that they are putting their name on. Being a UAW member, I appreciate your reply. It's unfortunate we do not have worldwide pollution standards like we have in the states. It is much less costly for corporations to trash the environment in other countries, and pay their workers squat. They are doing this in other countries, but we do have only one world to live in don't we?I won't get into a long "buy American" post here, but alot of the electrical assemblies we use are built in Mexico. Guess where 80 to 90% of the quality complaints we receive from our customers come from????
