rear window shatter

Post by brockeb »

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has heard of, or has had experience with the rear glass on the Pontiac Vibe shattering. My rear window is gone and when the police arrived, they could find no real cause. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle and there were several items in the hatch. Please let me know if you have heard anything on this. Thanks

Sounds like somebody accidentally broke it with something and didn't stick around. They don't spontaneously shatter as a rule especially in SD in November. I don't think it was 105 degrees outside.

well, it's gonna cost 845.00 to fix it. Just an FYI-may want to change your comp to 250 on the deductible end of things.

I remember somewhere a matrix owner had the rear glass spontaneously broken without explanation, but I can't find the reference. It is certainly uncommon, and I would think that it would take either a drastic thermal shock, possibly combined with a scratch, or maybe something was between the glass and the hatch. Or maybe somebody you don't know about came along and broke it.That's expensive to replace. You'll need it though.I usually carry a zero deductible comprehensive on a new car for a couple of years, and then drop it down to a deductible. So far I haven't need it for the Vibe.

I have seen this in older cars and glass but in extreme heat. Twice once when I was a valet.

I had a 1987 Chevy S-10 Blazer sitting in my garage and that rear window shattered when I closed one of the front doors. I've no idea what caused it, but AAA payed for the replacement. S**t sometimes happens that we can't explain.

I had an 1980 Grand Prix that the drivers side window shattered. I had just closed the door and was walking inside. I heard this 'tink-tink-tink' noise, kinda like hot metal makes as it cools, then 'GOOOSH'. It shattered into thousands of pieces! It was cold outside, but not very cold. Insurance covered it...

I have a crack in my windshield (again)...it's relatively small, and at the bottom near the wipers...if it stays there, and doesn't grow, I'm not replacing the glass.*crosses fingers in hopes he won't have to pay for ANOTHER windshield*

which way is it headed if it is going down don't leave it you can press on it from inside and run it and force it to go to the edge of the glass then it will go no further if you leave it it can change direction and it will to follow the heat of your defroster if it is running up leave it until it changes direction it may not but to help if you start your car when it is cold turn the defroster on while it is still blowing cold air and let the temp come up gradualy

I stood next to a friend as they closed the hatch on their relatively new Ford Explorer and the hatch burst into a billion pieces. Ford replaced it without explaination as to why it happened.
