I'm a weenie!

Post by jake75 »

Used coupon #9 of 10 of a 10 LOF service deal ($119.90) I got at my dealer some time ago. They said they used 5w-20 - who knows. That was a better investment than some of my stocks. They also had a $5 off coupon to replace the engine oil filter.- a net of $13.89 for that. I took a look at what was involved in changing that filter and decided it was well worth paying them to do it. The air filter alone would have probably cost almost that much at an auto parts store.

Even using cheap wally world oil and one of their filters, I don't think I can change oil in the Vibe myself for that. You did good there.

The $119.90 10 LOF card was probably bought 7 years ago - I change oil 2x a year since I only drive about 5,000 mi/year. Used some on my '03, some on my '09. Then there was the four free oil changes that Pontiac gave us a couple years ago. Today they get $189.90 for that 10 oil change card but it includes the Krex program for 4 months which is free roadside assistance, road hazard tire protection, 200,000 mile limited lubrication warranty, and emergency rental car. For that I'll let them put a little Krex in my oil at no extra charge. I'm not sure Krex does any good but it doesn't do any harm.Tony - the $5 coupon was $5 off their normal charge of $18.89 to replace the engine air filter - net cost $13.89 plus tax. No labor on that - just what they charge for the filter. But looking at the bill I now I see I only paid a total of $13.26. The only downside is that I was waiting a little more than 1-1/2 hoyrs today for that to get done. They have a comfortable waiting room and I had my reading material with me.My Chrysler dealer has a 4 'LOF "warranty" for $39.95.

One would think that the number of months would not have any bearing on the need to replace. Many days we drive nowhere. I feel like a "weenie" because when I took one look at all that would have to be undone to get to the engine air filter I decided even before knowing the low cost that it was something I did not care to do myself. Remember the old days. You unscrewed the wing nut, removed the cover, replaced the doughnut air filter, put the cover back and screwed the wing nut on to secure the cover. Job done - 2 minutes.CORRECTION: Recommended air filter replacement is every 30,000 miles or 24 months whichever comes sooner. I think I hit a happy medium in changing at 15,000 miles/36 months.
