I do not think its worth it. I've looked at the clusters and the back lights are really not accessible, unless you take it completely apart. It may be that the lights are soldered in and not plug in, never got that far into one to see. If it were me, I might put some white lines on the front of that...

I don't know what the differences are between the two, but Toyota alternator part numbers for an 04 Matrix are 27060-0D110-84 (1ZZ, base, XR) 27060-22090-84 (2ZZ, XRS) so it does seem like the different engines get different alternators. Not sure how the bad starter got too much juice if the starter relay wasn't closed, which obviously wouldn't be normal.
