Followup: No sign of oil on the sending unit or filter since tightening the sending unit about 6 weeks ago. Not sure now if I'll even bother replacing it, or just keep the new one on hand as a spare.

I had it in to a dealer last week for the air bag recall and asked them to put it on a lift and see if they could tell where it was coming from. The answer as relayed by the service writer was "oil cooler lines". What???

I wouldn't bother with the pan and filter at all. Drain 3.5 qts., put 3.5 new back in. Drive a week and do it again.

If I remember right the trick was getting the DRL/high/low wired correctly. I used a volt meter to compare with the other side. Then soldered, heat shrink and wrapped with tape.
