Generally speaking, I find car dealers and car salesmen to be among the most clueless people in the work force. There are exceptions, but not many. Maybe call a Toyota dealer and tell them you have a Matrix and see if they're more informed?

Don't feel bad. I've done this two or three times now, albeit for only a few minutes, with my manual tranny Vibe too. The 1.8L is very quiet and smooth, so it's easier to forget to shift up than in other 4-cyls I've owned.

Okay, so the 4spd auto is only available with AWD, that does make a difference. AWD is not offered at all on the HHR. Nevertheless, I am impressed that GM beats Toyota (even though it's in GM's car) in the non-AWD applications.

I don't think the warranties will be in danger. It would take GM actually going out of business to nullify warranties. If they simply gobankrupt, they would still honor warranties or else they'd lose what (ever smaller) market share they have.

Yes, that will be a real bummer if Pontiac goes away. Is that a real possibility or just rumors? If it's real, I wonder what would happen to the Vibe. Would it get pulled over into Chevy (the Saturn Astra is too much like the Vibe to have the Vibe go to Saturn) or would it just go away?

Having key "features" comes in handy if you have two or more cars in your household and don't want to carry around two or more key fobs. I carry around the key and fob for the Vibe and just the key to my wife's Impala while she carries around her Impala fob and just the key to the Vibe.
