Thanks for the info and the pics.Based on the noise I think we are just going to pull the engine so we can give it a good check and make sure whatever went did not cause other things to go as well. Given the mileage we may just rebuild the whole thing while it is out.

Can anyone give me a clue where to find the tach wire on the ECU? Or even what the ECU box looks like? There appear to be a number of possibilities behind the glove box and lots of bundles of wires. Removing and replacing the mirror was the tough part as I had no idea how it was attached internally.With some careful examination I figured out how to remove it and once you know how it is not too difficult to do.The mirror backing plate attaches with three snap in connectors coming form the motor....
