When you get it, see if it's the same filter as the '03 to '08 1.8L. I can't see any reason they would have changed it. His info was probably not updated yet which seems kind of lame.

It's not the same. For some reason, they decided that only the 1.8L needed to have a different oil filter. It is the type that you unscrew a cover, remove the old oil filter element, put the new one in, and replace the seal and screw the cover back on. The 2.4L engine has the screw on canister type filter.None of the aftermarket parts houses have a listing for 2009's yet either.

Go to a Toyota Dealer. Gm doesn't have much stock for the '09's yet, they are on backorder (probabally taking a lot of time sticking a GM sticker on a Toyota Filter!) and take about a week for a GM dealer to get.

Not just stickers.... My dealer strategicaly placed his business card over the big toyota logo that was on my lug nuts package....

FWIW, The local GM dealer can't locate a filter for my car. I went to the local Toyota dealer and they had one, in stock, and it was only $5.12. This is just the element with a seal

Just got my oil change to . They had to also go to Toyota dealer because Pontiac did not have it yet . The oil change place said they have never seen a 2009 yet ?

Can anyone tell me where the oil cannister is on the 1.8 liter 2009 engine, and what type of tool is required to take the lid off?

OK, I can answer most of my own question: I just went to a Toyota dealer and crawled under a 1.8 liter Matrix and saw where the cannister is. You need either a Toyota filter wrench or hopefully (I have one on order) a 68 mm wrench cap to unscrew it. Any thoughts on where I could get the special Toyota wrench? Apparently Toyota is not allowed to sell it to me. I checked the Mac Tools and Snap On Tools sites, but did not see it there.

My ms3 has this same oil filter method. I was on one of the mazda3 sites and a dealer was a sponser on. They had a buy 10 filters get the wrench cap for free purchase....so yeah did that. makes taking the filter cap off sooo much easier. Why cant toyota sell you one? at the worst DO NOT tell them you have a vibe, just say you have a 09 trix and need the tool to remove the oil filter.every time i went to the yota dealer and said i had a vibe they almost wouldnt sell me the part...dumb dumb ppl.

Just went through this with a 2.4L 09 Vibe- two different dealers, neither stocked the oil filter. Went to Toy dealer in Augusta Ga who was a complete jerk, Vibe doesn't have Toyota engine, all different, shoulda bought a Matrix blah blah blah. Whatever.
Finally got one dealer to order the spin on filter- $10+ WTH! After getting one in my hands I now find it crosses to several more common $3 filters....
But my big question now is-WHAT OIL? Owners manual says 5w-20. Fill cap says 5W-30. Does the cap say 5w-30 on any other 09 2.4l owner' engines?

Thanks- guess I'll ask the dealer to get the correct cap....The filter has GM 88969580 on the box but has a Toyota 90915-10004 inside that crosses to a Purolator L14479 or a Wix 51396, or many others I presume. Rutherfordton huh? I have some property in Polk County we visit frequently.

I'll keep that in mind. Haven't tried either of the two Toy dealers in Columbia. I was out of town Friday desperately trying to find an oil filter to change the oil in my son's Vibe on Saturday...hence the search that began in Augusta and ended with the $10 filter that was ordered late in the day Friday and came in Saturday in Columbia- whew!Now we get to call the dealer in Lugoff SC and ask them to get the correct cap..really wouldn't matter since I'm the designated family mechanic doing all the oil changes and now I know which oil it uses. Sure glad he got rid of the 97 Taurus with 151,000, that thing was killing me...every week it was something

Just got the car (2.4L) back from it's first oil change at the dealer. Didn't have any problem with the parts and they used the 5W-20 oil. I was hoping to have the next oil change at the local corner garage but I'm starting to fear they won't have the oil filter for a 2009 model...

i always used purolator filter in the vibe.. id recommend them.

I will do my first oil change in the next few weeks (Vibe 2009 1,8l), so I wanted to know if it's reaaly required to have the special tool to unscrew the oild filter, or is it possible to do it by hand?If the tool is required, do you know the size needed? Thanks

I'll answer my question. I've found the information on Matrix forums:REPLACEMENT
CAUTION:
• Prolonged and repeated contact with engine oil will cause removal of natural oils from the skin, leading to dryness, irritation and dermatitis. In addition, used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may cause skin cancer.
• Precautions should be taken when replacing engine oil to minimize the risk of your skin making contact with used engine oil. Wear protective clothing and gloves. Wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water, or use a waterless hand cleaner to remove any used engine oil. Do not use gasoline, thinners or solvents.
• For environmental protection, used oil and used oil filters must be disposed of at designated disposal sites.
1. DRAIN ENGINE OIL
(a) Remove the oil filler cap.
(b) Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil into a container.
(c) Clean and install the oil drain plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 37 N•m (377 kgf•cm, 27 ft•lbf)
2. REMOVE OIL FILTER CAP ASSEMBLY
(a) Using SST, loosen the oil filter cap 4 revolutions, align the cap ribs vertically, and drain the remaining engine oil in the oil filter cap.
SST: 09228-06501
Set a container below the oil filter cap assembly before loosening the oil filter cap. (b) Remove the oil filter cap assembly.
(c) Remove oil filter element and O-ring from the oil filter cap.
Be sure to remove the O-ring (for the cap) by hand, without using any tools, to prevent damage to the groove for the O-ring on the cap. 3. INSTALL OIL FILTER CAP ASSEMBLY
(a) Clean the oil filter cap threads and O-ring groove.
(b) Apply a small amount of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the oil filter cap.
(c) Set a new oil filter element in the oil filter cap.
(d) Remove any dirt or foreign matter from the installation surface and inside of the engine.
(e) Reapply a small amount of engine oil to the O-ring of the oil filter cap assembly. Align the cutout in the oil filter cap threads 90° to the grooves in the oil filter bracket and temporarily tighten the cap.
Make sure that the O-ring does not get caught between the parts. (f) Using SST, tighten the oil filter cap assembly.
Torque: 25 N•m (255 kgf•cm, 18 ft•lbf)
SST: 09228-06501 NOTICE:
• After tightening the oil filter cap assembly, check for gaps between the installation surfaces.
• Do not remove the oil filter bracket clip when installing the oil filter cap assembly.
• Do not cross thread the oil filter cap assembly.
4. ADD ENGINE OIL
(a) Add fresh engine oil and install the oil filler cap.

SST Number 09228-06501 is a 64mm cap. On the Assenmacher site, the TOY640 fit the oil filter #04152-YZZA6 and this is the factory oil filter for a Matix 2009 with 1,8l. So the tool needed is a 64mm!

The AC Delco parts store sold me a AC PF1233 for my '09 GT. Also on the box is 25161880. It is same size as Toyota filter. No leaks. No problems so far. The manual does show 88969580 but I removed a Toyota 90915-10004 I also put Mobil 1 5W-20 at 3800 miles. Will start changing at 5K as recommended in the manual. I thought the Vibe had an oil life sensor but apparently not.

Friend of mine give me one , and the box has #04152-YZZA6 on it..
It is a ORG. Toyota oil element kit ...

So where are these filters most readily available at this point? Still the dealer? I have 1000 miles and need to change it soon.

So the tool needed is a 64mm!Uh, well I just bought a 65 mm 14 fluted cap and it fits like a glove. Perhaps 64 will work, but I guarantee that the 65 works fine. I just crawled under my car and began turning it with no difficulty. And yes file014....you can get the filter at any Toyota dealer. Bring the filter number though. Most of those bozo dealerships don't have 2009 part supply books yet, even though these filters are readily stocked at Toyota.

i got a couple filters at the toyota dealer yesterday. today I went to pepboys to get a filter wrench. they had 68 mm but not 64 or 65. dang. I did get 5 quarts of proline oil and a filter (for different car) for $10. Actually I got 40 quarts of oil and 8 filters. 5w20 was included in the sale too.
