Almost new Vibe owner EDIT: Scratch the "almost" :)« » Reply  Edit

Hi all.

So, I've been thinking of getting a Vibe for quite some time now. I like it's looks, fuel economy and utility. I'm an independent computer service technician and I drive around with alot of equipment and shuttle PC's to and from my home office. I love all the room in the Vibe when the rear seats are folded, and that's where I expect them to stay 90% of the time. The fuel economy is one thing that really makes me lean towards the Vibe over an SUV. Plus, I like the look of the Vibe over the Matrix

I grew out of my current vehicle a long time ago, but every time I wanted to buy something new I always said "this car is still running, so why spend thousands on something new?". Well, yesterday something happened to put me over the edge. While driving on the Florida Tpke. my A/C went. Not being a mechanic I expect the repair to cost in the neighborhood of $900. Combine that with needing new tires, brakes and a tune-up I don't think it's wise to throw that much money into an aging vehicle. Spent $1,500 to have the transmission rebuilt 1.5 years ago and it sounds like that may be going too.

I can put 25,000 miles per year on the car (divided between hwy & city driving) and was wondering how the Vibe holds up to above average mileage. I'm also wondering about getting an extended warranty from the dealer. I expect the factory warranty to last 1.5 years and would like to have some warranty protection after that.

So, does anyone have any opinions on using the vibe as a service vehicle and getting an extended warranty? Any advice is very much appreciated!

i have about 24K on mine and had it about a year. its still runs fine and gets good gas milage. i do have some mods on it but still rides nice and good. it has plenty of room and good stereo system for stock.

There are lots of people that will chime in to let you know the goods... and some of the bads.

Hope you get one and stay

Welcome to the site.
I've had my vibe for about 10 months and I get about 26-28 mpg with a mixture of City/Hwy driving, but it is about 80% city driving.
The storage room you get when putting the back seat down is great. So it would definitely give you the room you will need for your equipment, but you will get better gas mileage than a small SUV.

There's a guy here who has two Vibes he runs as taxis, had a thread about the odometer kitting 299,999 kms.

Around DC, I see white Pontiac vibes with QWest painted ont he side, I think they use them as part of their service fleet.

I ran throuh my warranty quickly, now at 118K miles. I had a little tranny trouble in my 5 speed, so the extended warranty would have helped me out, but I didn't have it. Vibe is still a car worth having, and after many miles in the thing, I still enjoy driving it.

Welcome to the board!
I put on most of the 5,000 miles on Mom's Frosty; I think it's been just about 3 months now. No problems. Another Vibe (for me!) on the way

Thanks to everyone for your replies. Strike "almost" from the title - I went and bought one today - Stealth, auto, ABS, side airbags, preferred package (power) and premium monotone appearance package. I plan on having the windows tinted and alram system installed within the next couple of weeks.

It was raining here today or I would have taken pics. I know how youse guys hate pics, heh heh heh Maybe tomorrow.

Congratulations on the new Vibe! I hope you like it as much as we do, and that you have many trouble free miles.

Did you go for the extended warranty?

Yes, I got the extended warranty. 5yrs., 100,000 miles. It was expensive, but I felt for this purchase it gives me some piece of mind. I hope I never need to use it though.

Welcome to the site!

An extended warranty is not bad I recommened a GMPP GM Warranty but regardless of what you do, follow the maintenance schedule in the owners manual...

Thanks to everyone for your warm welcomes. Pics will be coming when the timing is right - meaning it stops raining and I have the time to snap 'em. Soon.

Yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about! I expect to hit the 100K mark in just over 4 years if I stay in this line of work (I don't expect any changes soon). I already put over 350 miles on it between yesterday & today. I filled up today and averaged 31 MPG - that's with the A/C on the entire time and 35% city driving.....and that's assuming the dealer filled it to the top when I took delivery.
