painting interior plastic.

Post by ShotInTheDark »

I saw a new product on Super Tuner T.V this weekend. It was an interior paint kit that was 3 stages. A base coat, a second, and a clear. What made it special was it was chrome illusion paint, It was available in three different color shifts. Now I have gone to Advance auto parts, and Pep Boys, who by the way, the guy said it was available from, and neither of them have heard of it. Anyone who can find out any info it woukd be greatly appreciated.

I've seen a commercial on TV some time ago advertising a new paint from Plastikote that was made especially for painting plastic surfaces.I guess it was made to be ever so slightly flexible for plastic.I'll have to check out Plastikote's website.

whatever you do, make sure you get a sealer for the parts. you'll want to seal them first to make sure they dont' react to the paint or it will bubble and crack. it may take a few coats of sealer before you can actually paint the plastic. i watched my paint guy and helped him sand the parts a little when he did mine. if you're doing 3 stage paint, then it's expensive if you mess up. if you sand too far down, the paint or plastic underneath will react to any new stuff you spray on... thus the need for sealer. even that will react. you just spray it, let it dry, wet sand with about 1000 grit, respray, wet sand again, and hopefully by then you have a nice smooth sealed surface for your paint.

I'm not sure I need to go that far. I bought a two stage paint and it doesn't even mention sanding. I'm just gonna try it and see what happens.

Good Luck- When i had my Mountaineer I had no problem painting my interior myself- But on my Buddy's grand am it was hell! Gm used a polypropoline plastic that is not easy to paint- I went through everything I could think of with sealing and sanding but it came out looking horrible everytime- then I talked to someone who said I needed polypropoline primer to make it work- The stuff is a pain to use but it is the only way to get paint to stick right to that kind of plastic- So My advice would be to find out what kind of plastic is in the Vibe before you paint it- To figure it out you should be able to take off the piece you want to paint and look at the bottom side of it- It should have a code of either ABS or PP for polypropoline- Hope that helps ya

I never thought that this would be this complicated, now I'm second guessing myself on the whole deal.

It's really not that bad, you're just dealing with petroleum products. Both plastic and paints are petroleum based products. If you use incompatible compounds, they react with each other and mess up the paint job. You just have to do your homework first.

I have to assume you are talking about a paint by Dupli-color. Could be one of these two, either of which can be purchased at AutoZone (at least that's where I found the MIRAGE kit for $19.99).MIRAGE (3-coat process that is color shifting paint)http://www.duplicolor.com/products/mirage.html orMETALCAST (gives a colored chrome/metallic look)http://www.duplicolor.com/products/metalcast.html I hope those links help out a little... let me know if either of those were the product you were looking for. I bought some of the MIRAGE paint (purple/green kit) to put on a computer case that I have (call me a geek, but I think it will look sweet). I haven't got around to actually using it yet, but I hope to in the next few months.

I was trying to find the red blue. But they didn't carry it and it wasn't available as a kit. It was like 35 bucks for all three. Now I'm not sure about the paint because of the plastic....and the fact that when I removed it it had no code on the back.
