Vibe died on road. What could it be?

Post by elrodvoss »

So I have a 2005 vibe, about 250k miles. I have replaced the timing chain about 10 months ago. Was getting some issues with rough idle in gear. So I replaced the air filter, replaced the spark plugs.

Still didn't resolve. Did more research and found articles about air intake valve. Mine is electronic, so took the air intake hose off at the valve, put in the spray hose for air intake cleaner. Helper reved engine at 2k rpm while I sprayed while can, as per instructions.

Put all back together, car started up. Idle was better. Drove about 5 miles and died while breaking at a stop light. Towed back to home garage. Car will crank and cranks strong. But will not start. Does not even attempt like a misfire or something.

Checked connections and battery, all seated properly.

What is my next troubleshooting course?

Fuel or spark. Which one or both are lacking? How can this be verified?

I found a reference from another forum: https://www.toyotanation.com/threads/09 ... e.1360457/

Probably borked something sucking a foreign substance thru the intake. Have you done a compression test?

Ya. So far 1 is 90. 2 and 3 zero

Getting spark, so timing chain should be good. Didn't hear a clang. Going to pull head off and see if chain and cams rotate.

Replaced fuel pump in process as well.
