Tried to trade my Vibe

Post by Vulcan05 »

Went to a Toyota dealer Friday. Looked into trading my 2010 with ALL the available option in on a 2016 Camry. The Vibe has 42000 on it.
They offered me $7000 for the Vibe.
I walked out and drove the Vibe home.

Vibe GT's (09-10) in Calgary on kijiji are running $8-10K, with much higher mileage. $7K for a trade-in sounds about right, as they usually knock $2K off what they can sell it for.

Sell it yourself, and buy the Camry from a different dealer.

I just received $9,100 for my 2009 in an insurance settlement. The difference is that with an insurance settlement I received the retail value. With a trade you receive trade value which is substantially less.

The only thing that matters when making a trade/purchase is the final out the door cost. How they manipulate the line items is meaningless. You want a bigger trade figure? They will increase the price of their vehicle to allow the larger trade figure. If you are shopping at a dealer that already heavily discounts their asking price, you can expect the trade value to be heavily discounted as well. Like I said, only the final out the door cost is what really matters.

They're not going to take a trade unless they can profit from it. Used vehicles are the backbones of dealerships. They're businesses; they can't buy your car off of you at full retail price without a profit margin.

Were you and the Vibe in an accident?

It depends. I traded in a wrecked 1991 Corolla (still drove great, it got t-boned at low speed) with the power steering blown and A/C not working, plus generally heavily worn interior... and got $1000 trade in value on it. I had already gotten about $1000 cash from insurance from the wreck. The dealer probably bumped up the price of the used truck I was buying a bit to compensate, but I felt I got a good deal on the truck considering it was from a dealer. Very clean, local trade, relatively low miles (115k or so). I easily sold the truck a couple years later for a decent price (not a big loss), despite the a big dent in the tail gate that happened while I had it, from a small trailer coming off the hitch ball and ramming the tongue into it. The guy was so pleased with it, he didn't even try to haggle the price.

We're proud of you for standing your ground. Save the headache and extra $$$ that you'd be spending and KEEP the Vibe. It will last you a LONG time.

Why are you getting rid of the Vibe ? As others stated you are far better off selling the Vibe on your own 8-)

Good question. I just like a change every few years. If I keep the Vibe it will soon need battery, brake fluid flush, tires, and I would also change trans fluid and coolant change. I know, the last two are LIFETIME, but I would feel better changing them. I also know all that can be done at a fraction of the cost to trade.

Maybe I just have the "seven year itch". Anyway, there has been no further contact between me and the Toyota dealer, so the Vibe is still in the garage.

The dealer and I finally came to an agreement. $11907.38 and the Vibe got me a silver LE with trunk liner, all weather floor mats, body side moldings and sill protectors (none of which matter, they were with the car). A week ago, they wanted $15600 and the vibe for the exact same car. Sometimes you just have to walk out and let the deal simmer a bit.

Happy with the Camry, but I did hate to leave the Vibe. Someone is going to get a nice used car. Wish we had room for both of them.

Not really. They say that because people treat cars like a disposable thing. Use 3-4 years, throw away and buy new. Toyota actually says to change IV ATF at 60k (normal) or 30k (harsh conditions), 60k to 75k for the WS ATF. The SLLC pink coolant is supposed to last 100k miles, but mainly what you're looking for is a change in pH that leads to corrosion.

Plus, lifetime can mean lifetime of that part or assembly, not of the car.

"Lifetime" is relative. If you never change the fluid and it dies, that's the lifetime. Same with engines.

If they claimed the engine oil lasts a "lifetime" without changing it, the engine would last until it dies with the original oil, thereby being the end of it's lifetime.

Yep, hit in the rear in January this year. The Vibe was totaled but we are okay. The other driver was cited and their insurance is paying.
