Also, are there any upgrades to the engine that have given good results in improving the mileage?
Thanks

Mobil 1 5W30 oil, new set of NGK plugs, new plug wires, new air filter element, 39 psi front and 37 psi rear if the tires are rated for pressure that high, the least amount of stuff possible in the car (only what you need for that day or trip) and
most important a light and steady touch on the gas pedal!!!
I've squeezed 40 mpg out of a couple of Summertime tanks of gasoline, commuting to work on back roads. Takes some patience and light traffic. Speed limits on the back roads ranged from 35 to 50 mph. I stuck to them as close as I could. Results were impressive for a car this size. Your Automatic and AWD should easily get up into the 30-35 mpg range during the summer.
Read up on Hypermiling techniques on the internet. Some of those techniques are not usable or suitable for most daily driving situations, but using what you can when it fits your driving environment can help significantly increase your MPGs! Let us know how that goes.
