How do I add cruise control to a 2009 base model?

Post by 09BaseWhite »

Purchased a 2009 Vibe base model with auto transmission and want to add cruise control. No dealership will touch it and most of the mechanics I have spoken to have not been helpful. One mechanic is willing to install the OEM cruise control module, but said the body control module would need to be reprogrammed or the car wouldn't recognize that cruise control was now on the car. He said that there was no guarantee that this would work and recommended that I research a bit and see if anyone has done this successfully. So, please help! Has anyone added cruise control to an 09 Vibe base model and how did you do it? I am getting a little desperate. Thank you much.

From what I've read and seen: Go buy the cruise control stalk that mounts on the steering wheel. That's it.... I don't recall reading anything else, no relay, no underhood dickering, just the stalk!

Thanks for the reply. So to your knowledge, its kind of a plug and play thing? No fiddling with reprogramming the BCM or anything?

A bit pricey though... might just want to grab one from a wrecked Toyota!

According to this ebay auction, it is just basically plug and play. A bit expensive new though.

I agree about looking for a used one. Try http://www.car-part.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; looking for for a local 09+ Matrix, Corolla or even Vibe. And after looking at a few other ebay auctions, it looks like the same switch is used in a lot of other Toyota and Lexus models.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2008-TOYOTA-PRI ... d0&vxp=mtr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I found that a 2009 Matrix switch is running about $80 or so at http://parts.olathetoyota.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but since there are no pics, I can't confirm if it is the add on switch or not. Looks like some Matrix models had cruise control on the steering wheel. Maybe check with a local Toyota dealer parts department and see if they have more info on the switches available.

I installed cruise on my '09 base Vibe. It is just plug & play... I think I paid $100 for the cruise stalk & then another $30 for the "wiring harness". If you want a factory look, you'll also need the little cover on the side of the wheel... or do what I did & drill a hole in the existing plastic cover
